As long as the stock MAF and injectors are used. Doesn't mean it'll run right or at peak performance though. I think when I was doing some looking the original 2.3 came pullied for 13 or 14psi. I think in my manual it said something about running the stock stuff with the Whipple.
Interesting, did not know that.

I remember seeing an old article somewhere about installing the 2.3 and it saying there's no need for a tune. I guess they were betting on Ford having a really rich stock tune.

I do know my 2.9 has a CARB number in the manual. The JLT is CARB legal too. It's everything else that isn't.

When they first came out of Ford Racing, the Whipple could be used in the stock tune. But, nobody ran the Whipple at close to stock boost. But was the option back when they came out.

The 2.3 and 2.9 are the same in that regard, but with the extra HP needed to drive the 2.9L they both make basically same power stock tune. I have run both scenarios by the Whipple techs.

The rub is that the whole damn thing needs to come apart to swap injectors, so its not easy to swap some things and turn the wick up between smog and fun tunes. Same goes for the KB.

The VMP would be the best solution for a CA car, but they do not have a CARB #. Otherwise easy enough to pull the elbow and injectors every 2 years if absolutely necessary.

Wait a second.....you can just bolt those blowers on and drive it safely with no tune?

On the low boost pulley they come with yes, but you are leaving a lot on the table.

Or you could do what a guy I follow on Instagram is doing.... he picked up a complete long block (blower to oil pan) and is swapping that in for smog.

Roush 2.3 is virtually the same blower (Eaton TVS2300). Their phase 1 kit has a CARB E.O. # too (EXECUTIVE ORDER D—418—23).

I believe they have to be the exact item. I had asked this to JLT because I needed the C.A.R.B number for smog; he said it had to be the exact intake which is a high boost. Even though the cold air looks similar he said if the number doesn’t match the picture provided to them from JLT it would most likely fail a referee... ive never seen the pics or this happen personally but they make them I’d say they may have seen this happen.

Yes I believe so too. My point was only regarding the VMP blower installation without a CARB # mentioned here:

I assume he means VMP Gen 1 (with removeable elbow) The blower in Roush Phase One Kit (with CARB #) is identical except the logo. Almost everything in these kits are the same parts, except heat exchanger & maybe TB? So the Roush kit makes a comparable baseline to mod from but can be returned to CARB approved "stock" for emissions.

No Roush blower has a CARB # for a Terminator.

This is true. When I posted I didn't realize we're on the Terminator forum here, even though the thread title says "04 Cobra"! Apologies, I need to pay more attention

Last year I was due for a smog check. I went to the smog shop that normally go to. When they inputed the vehicle info into the computer, it said that I needed to go to a referee station. After some research here, it is likely due to the rear o2 sensors being turned off, found on prior smog checks.

Were any of your monitors turned off when you took the car to the smog shop? Also did the car get hooked up to the state computer?

The rear monitors were turned off in the tune 10+ years ago. I always passed with the sct tune. This time the smog tech was directed to send me to a referee station. He did not try to plug in to my computer since the state computer said that I needed to go to the referee station.

That means you were flagged by the state after one of your last tests.

I recently found out you can search the state ref site for your smog check history here Vehicle Test History. If you or anyone else having these issues wouldn't mind I'd be interested to know what your vehicle history is. This might be a way for some of us to know if we are getting sent to the ref BEFORE we go to the smog shop. If any of my cars showed up as needing to see the ref I'd just make an appointment instead dealing with a smog shop first.

Going by this is does not matter of the car has a history of passing legit or not and my car needs to be referee now and I’ve never taken the car other than stock. Guess it’s time to see if anyone has a factory 04 mid pipe I can rent to go.

I think you're missing my point. I am trying to see if this site will let us know if our cars need to see the ref BEFORE any of us go to a smog shop.

What I was hoping to know from you was if the smog requirement at the top showed ref required or not. I guess I should have been more specific.

Knowing if this site is accurate or not would help us prepare. For example my car shows a basic is smog check needed. I have however had a problem trying to pass before and I suspect because of those issues I will be sent to the ref next time even though my next check doesn't say I need to see the ref. Accuracy of the site and being able to plan is all I am after.

Yes, the State Bar site will show you a smog history and whether or not you need to see a ref for your current smog check. That’s where I found out about mine.
