So first day was brutal. I was ready to puke in 30 minutes. When it came time to free roll, I was so exhausted I couldn't even do anything lol. I am so out of shape. We have 9 black belts in BJJ in my gym, so a wealth of knowledge.

Krav Maga Monday-Thursday, Kickboxing on Friday for Cardio, and Krav Maga on Saturday if I'm not worn out. 44 years-old and a fat bastard. Wife goes with me and the youngest child goes to Krav twice a week and with both of us to kickboxing on Friday.

haha- awesome, sounds like your first day was exactly what it should be!!

It’s going to get worse before it gets better. Go as much as you can, and even when you don’t think you can handle it. The bruises and mat burn will all go away, your skin and body will adapt with time and repetition.
Just don’t quit.
You’ll be a new person in 3 months.

Anyone here training mixed martial arts? My State requires masks, and there's no rolling, contact, or pad holding.

Anyone else required to wear masks? ****ing ridiculous. I almost fainted training the other day on the heavy bag. Out of respect to my instructor, we are all wearing them. He admits it's burdensome, but he could be fined if a county mask nazi shows up. We were closed from March 15 to July 15. Just glad to be back at it!

We have to wear masks, but our instructor lets married couples spar with each other and not wear a mask.....so, my wife gets to beat me.

Even though we wear masks, it's still full contact. We disinfect the mat, bags, Thai pads, mitts, practice knives/guns, jump ropes, and anything else we use after each session. We even disinfect the soles of our shoes before stepping onto the mat and stop every so often to disinfect our hands.

If it isn't 90+ degrees and 100% humidity outside, we go outside for drills so we don't have to wear masks if we choose so. Yesterday was 88 degrees and oddly low humidity after Hanna passed through, so we beat the crap out of each other outdoors.

Masks can be removed if you’re training(on the mats); but we’re expected to wear one at all other times.

@Sirraf - did you die?

Haha, i have been meaning to update. I went to my second class on Wednesday. I did better in the way of not gassing myself out in 10 minutes. I was actually able to stay on the mats the whole time and absorb the material. I am going to start going 3 times a week. I live an hour away from the gym, so I can't really go more than that. I am really enjoying it so far. I'm not sure I have ever sweat so much so fast in my life.

I also bought 2 new Datsusara gi's. I had a Fuji one from starting the class and it felt like wearing a hay bale.

I train at a Gracie Barra school- they sell gi's with their trademarked patches which means I'm unfamiliar with different brands.

I train 4 to 5 days a week(school is only 15 min away) and launder the gi immediately afterward with the rash guard. I've tried numerous cleaning strategies and detergents including Lysol's antibacterial additive for sportswear. What I find to work best is white vinegar in the pre-rinse cycle, then regular detergent and fabric softener. Occasionally I use the hot setting, but normally just warm for the water temp. Hang dry. I don't wash the belt.

Glad you're sticking with it. The distance sucks, but Brian Cushing(former line backer and current strength coach for the Texans) trains at one of the Gracie barra schools in the Houston, and recently relocated to be just 10 minutes closer to the school...you might find yourself house hunting soon.

The Datsusara gi I got feels like a bathrobe. Its amazing. Its made from hemp also, so it supposed to have the anti-microbial properties. Wasn't very cheap, but worth it I think.

While personal comfort is nice, I would avoid a gi that is easy (for my opponent) to grip and hold.

The land of commies and socialists!
I want to start training so bad as I have a school literally 10 minutes from my house. I have two problems though, 1. Is the damn school is closed because of this BS virus situation. 2. Is a minor health problem that won't go away.

Because of this BS I've only accomplished 1 of my 2 goals for this year. I lost 30 lbs but haven't started BJJ. OP I genuinely envy you. Don't ****ing quit!

My second week in. Going great. Got some private lessons going also. I almost got my first submission today by doing a cross face then a transition into a rear naked. I didn’t sink it good enough, but I was close! I notice the heavy/bigger guys just smother me and I can’t breathe and I’ll tap from their body weight on me lol.

This stuff is ADDICTING!!!

Hell yes! Getting to the back from side control in week 2 is awesome. Those submissions will start appearing everywhere- no need to rush. I really think developing strong defensive skills is most important in the beginning.

I’m not great at it, but I absolutely work to avoid bottom positions with heavy dudes. Once you’re there it can be really hard to escape. I start by trying for an underhook and moving their legs(using my legs) to attempt half guard. Simultaneously avoiding them moving into mount. Oh- and definitely framing on the neck and jaw with the underside of my forearm to forcibly make space.
There are a few good sweeps from this position- check out the “Gordo Sweep” as an example.

There's heavy and then there's feeling heavy. The really good guys weigh 150lbs but feel like they weigh 300 when they're on top of you.
