So Joe Gibbs was a Super Bowl winning head coach. Decided he wanted to be in NASCAR. From what I know about him, I can respect his accomplishments and want to read his book.

How does anyone, other than by a famous name, “walk-on” NASCAR, but actually contribute value?

Hopefully this will lead to a life advice thread.

Heart and determination. In motorsports, you need deep pockets too. I can't remember if he bought a team and turned it into what it is today, but I do know that if it wasnt for Joe Gibbs vision and leadership, they would have been just like all the other start up teams that line up, take the green and park after a few laps.

Additionally, the talent at JGR is what helped Toyota actually survive and thrive as a manufacture in a sport that is antiquated in terms of what technology is allowed, even with the advent of fuel injection and Ethanol race fuel.

In the end, Joe Gibbs' ability to lead and a passion for racing is what made JGR a success in a very exclusive NASCAR Cup racing club.

I remember seeing an interview with him, he said he didn’t know squat about racing, but like football, he surrounded himself with people who did. That and as mentioned, deep pockets, and he accomplished what he set out to do, win multiple championships.

Guys like that, it doesn't matter what they are in. They can succeed by putting the right people in the right place. They have a vision to do shit like that.

Toto Wolff, the team principle of Mercedes F1 is the same way. He bought into an F1 team, after a few years became the director of the team and then was hired by Mercedes the following year.

His win percentage is nearly 70% of his races since like 2014 or something. He won the constructors and drivers championship 6 years in a row, which no team has ever done and they are absolutely going to make it happen again this year. They only continue to get faster and seemingly more reliable.

He has said in interviews he doesn't really understand the technical side of F1 cars, but he knows how to hire people that do.

Gibbs is the exact same way. I bet you could make him the CEO of any company and he would succeed in that too.

Joe Gibbs was bankrupt as he was winning his first super bowl in 83. Housing investment in the middle of the country that failed.

It’s been years since I read his book. I don’t think he put much money in. Because of his name he was able to get sponsors that were able to get through the early expensive years. That and people who knew what was up.

Name recognition or not, how you add “value” in at least the top 3 tiers of NASCAR is money. Doesn’t matter if your name is Joe Dirt or Joe Gibbs. Money talks bs walks. You see a lot of these drivers whom don’t have as much talent as others but they have either family money or a company behind them. Once you’re at the top tier, talent is what keeps you there vs getting you there. Cole Custer has money behind him but what’s gonna keep him on at least for a few more years is he’s won a cup race, as a rookie no less. Even Chase Elliott whose taken over Dale Jrs role as the face of NASCAR couldnt win his rookie year.

Joe Gibbs would not have done anything without interstate batteries or Home Depot behind him.
