Just my 2 cents here. I had a 89 5.0 LX with 2.02 Aluminum Heads, Holley intake, 320 degree cam ,etc. That Mustang made the same type of sound and came from the #8 cylinder around 5k miles after I made those engine modifications. I know the 5.0 and 5.8 Trinity motors are 2 different animals, but an internal combustion Engine is an Engine. Long story short: I tore the engine apart, cause the sound was driving me crazy too. What I found was when I installed the Aluminum heads, I didn't torque down that particular ARP head bolt as tight as it should have been. Small amounts of coolant would leak by head gasket, into the oil. The oil would foam and the lifters only in that #8 Cylinder would make that
noise. I know, you would think all the lifters would rattle? but it was only the lifters on #8. And just like your engine,it would come and go.I Put engine back together(properly with new gaskets, lifters) and Bingo. The sound went away. If I were you I'd look at the oil & see if there's any amount of foaming or discoloration or signs of antifreeze/water in oil. That could be your culprit. Hope you find your problem. Good luck

Yeah that's a interesting story , good job tracking that down. My issue is always there when hot. never when cold. I hear it through the exhaust also.

I think I wont to try Amsoil just to see if that would make any difference, I just need to find out where to get some.

Usually when it's a tappet/lifter, the noise will be constant. This sounds like it's happening when the car is revved a little over idle.

Also, again if it was a lifter that had some kind of leak you'd hear it cold and it would go away when the car warmed up (filled the lifter with oil).

Since you checked the cylinders, plugs and it's all good I'd definitely think it was exhaust related.

I had a tick like that on my '06 GT (not GT500) after I changed oil weight... went to a thicker oil after I put a blower on it. Even after switching back to the OEM oil that tick never went away, but the car drove fine... never had an issue it was just annoying :)

The car does it at idle also but if I get on it you really hear it at idle. Just driving normal you hear it here and there.

I have update that puts another wrench in this or maybe tell me whats going on. Saturday i had a tuner look at my car while driving and he said the car was misfiring at idle but when moving it was fine, just at idle. He said it was doing every 10 seconds or so. Im going to swap coils from the right side to the left and maybe injectors. See if the noise follows.

Doubt 1T - Did you ever find out what the tapping noise is and what was causing it?

Not yet. I think it’s a Driver side exhaust Lash adjuster, being I'm hearing the noise resonate from the exhaust. I’d attempt to change out the lifter myself but I’m a little nervous . It’s suppose to go in the shop this Friday to be done, hopefully that’s it. Unless i get enough courage and do it myself , also no one lives around me to give me a Hand that KNOWS what there doing or I would ripped it apart by now.

Throw out bearing?
Maybe a spark plug with broken ceramic incorrectly sparking?

That sounds like an 'every revolution' type of periodic noise.

Just an up date on the status. Its at the shop now and we took the valve cover off and it actually looks really clean. He dropped the exhaust and didn’t see anything wrong there either. He told he didn’t see anything obviously wrong but He and some buddies of mine suggested we replace all of the exhaust and intake Hydraulic lashers which I figured I was going to do anyway being it’s a pain in the ass to take the valve cover off. I also attached the exhaust sound I hear when the car is hot enough the noise is auditable at idle. More louder on the driver vs passenger but its resonating all the way through.

I'm an idiot on Cars but that sound doesn't seem like it would be on the engine side but more down the line like drive train or even exhaust related?

Heads were clean though. How many miles you have on the Car?

Yeah its a puzzle to say the least. He checked the exhaust and it was clean. The noise does sound like its coming from the driver side valve cover near cylinder 7-8. The thought its a weak exhaust lasher when it gets hot and is resonating out the exhaust. The car has 23K miles.

lol nah there something wrong here I shouldn’t hear noises like that. I’m more worried of driving it and not fixing it then run into a much bigger issue later on.

*UPDATE*

I picked up the car last night and it seems its all fixed now the Noise is gone. We replaced all 8 intake Hydraulic lashers and 8 Exhaust on the drivers side. So my assumption from Day 1 was the culprit. I'm assuming when hot the lasher started to fail. When cold he said they all felt firm when he pulled them. We did 3 tests, the first was getting the car up to temp and running it normal, it was fine. Second one was getting the car up to temp and running it hard to 6k RPMS and it was quiet, also 90 degree heat. Third test was me going home 40 minutes normal driving and some spirited driving, car was quiet.

I also noticed it seemed like the car didn't "pop" as much out the exhaust when letting off the throttle , it seemed smoother. maybe its just me.

Nope, none. They all felt firm. So the only logical reason would be when hot the spring inside the lasher would fail under certain pressures.
Glad there was no damage and all is good now. This might be something for others to look at if this happens.

Im happy lol, im glad I didn't just "let it go" I stuck with it being my OCD lol I wouldn't be surprised a lot of the "ticking" issues I see that this might be the issue and im happy I was able to track it down in my case this might help someone else to be open to the idea of looking in there.
