Driving home from work and the car overheated. It was fine on the highway, and as soon as I got on the side streets (just putzing along) the temp gauge drifted to red. I immediately pulled over and shut down. Popped the hood and everything looked OK. Started the car just for a few seconds to see if fan was coming on. Fan did not and coolant started spewing out of resivoir cap. Shut car down immediately.

I then checked the fuse for the fan and noticed it was blown. Swapped the abs fuse to see if fan would kick on using my XCAL 2 I had in the trunk. Fan barely spun and made a clacking sound. So now I know the fan is bad. Let car cool down for a hour or so and limped it home making sure coolant temps didn't go above 204.

Car seemed to run a bit rough so I'm wondering if I damaged something. Obviously I'll replace the fan, and top off coolant, but what should I be looking for? Check plugs, change oil?

One thing at a time
Check oil for coolant and start off by replacing the fan and running the car. You might find everything is ok and you’re worrying for nothing.

Fan probably split at the seam and got hung up. When mine went I thought the motor was knocking as it slapped around (happened during a pull)

swap the fan and go from there

Thanks for the responses. I'm probay over reacting, digging up old threads it looks like more often than not when someone over heats it usually dosent mean anything too drastic.

I did think my engine was knocking at that time but thank goodness ended up being the fan lol.

Guess I'll drain the oil and pull the plugs while I'm working on the car. I have a dyno appt in 2 weeks so I want to make sure everything is good.

Got right to it. Pulled the fan and it's definetly a gonner. Pulled the plugs (NGK TR7ix gapped to .20) and they look OK all thought I don't know how to read plugs all that well. I'll order up my fan tomorrow, drain the oil, and order up new plugs. When I drained the coolant out of the resivoir it looked green and clean / clear, no signs of oil thank goodness. Hopefully when I get everything back together it will be smooth sailing.
