Hello All,

Well, I do not have any pictures for you today. I "DID" work on the car this weekend. However, I finished scraping the tar like undercoating off and then did some body work in the engine bay. I have posted pictures of this type of work already. So, there really is nothing new to see.

The good news is I'm going to attempt to Raptor Line the under carriage next weekend. So, I'm hoping to have made a significant step forward and have something pretty cool to post up after next weekend.

Once I'm done with that I will be able to install the rear end and rear suspension. Then hopefully I can start laying out my brake lines. Then maybe install the fuel tank. I'm not sure. I'm hoping that once the body work on the engine bay is done this project will start to progress a little faster......

Didn't I see pics of this car all put together?

Hello 98 svt. Sorry for my late reply. Been really crazy for me this week at work...……

Yes sir you did. I built this car originally in 2010. I had "bigger" plans for it back then, but didn't have certain skills, tools or finances. So, I built a decent car, but it wasn't quite what I wanted to do. Then I tried to install NOS on the car and ended up blowing the motor.

I had a friend with a 66 Mustang who needed some help. So, I sold him my transmission, driveshaft and rear-end. I put my car on a mobile dolly, covered it up and let it sit in my garage for years.

Starting at the beginning of this year I started preparing to rebuild this car (acquiring tools, equipment and putting a parts list together), but decided it was time to build it the way I originally envisioned it. In May of this year I got started and began sharing this build with SVTP.

So, this is why the car is already painted and why you seen pictures of a complete car.

Great question and good catch...………...

Hello everyone,

As some of you know I want to paint the undercarriage this weekend. Therefore, I needed to get the garage floor cleaned up. So, I convinced the wife to let me put the fenders in the house. I got a funny look, but she agreed ;)………..

Fenders sitting in the second living room corner covered in some nice blankets to protect them...…..:D

You should've covered them in white sheets and said they're Halloween decorations.

LMAO!!! I try stuff like that with her all the time Bob. I was on vacation a little while ago. Just stayed home, but by being home I annoyed her LOL. I would come in the house after working on the car with my dirty shoes on, I would just throw my clothes over a chair in our room, I would leave the toilet seat up and just do "husband" stuff like that which drove her crazy.

I told her I liked being home and could not wait to retire. She told me, "Let's not get ahead of ourselves." I don't think she's ready to handle me full time just yet LMAO.....

Guess she would rather have parts in the house full time instead of me LMAO....

Okay everyone,

Got a lot accomplished this weekend. Man was it a pain in the _ _ _...….LOL. I was able to get the undercarriage completed.

First I got the garage prepped. I got my floor cleaned up and put up some plastic in my garage to keep the over spray in check. Lastly, I covered the car in plastic to protect the paint and to keep over spray off the car.

Then I got started.

First I applied a white epoxy primer to cover the bare metal. I choose white so I could clearly see any areas I may have missed when I sprayed the Raptor liner.

Both of these products are very messy to spray. The epoxy primer is VERY thick and it was difficult to mix with a paint stick. Once the activator was added it became manageable and felt like paint. However, it is very sticky. And laying on my back and spraying up made it difficult because the overspray was falling on me and the garage floor. So, it made it difficult.

The Raptor liner was EXACTLY the SAME as the epoxy primer. Very sticky and messy. I do NOT recommend doing this job as I did it, unless you have no other choice as was my case. This job would have been so much better if I had a lift, to be higher off the ground, or a rotisserie.

Okay after all that complaining LOL. I did get it done and I think it came out great in my opinion. I am VERY happy with the results.

I understand my floor pan is not perfect. Again, this is not a show car, but a VERY nice driver.

Looks Great! What gun did you use to spary overhead? The reason I am asking is because I am getting ready to do much the same with my '01 Bullitt. I am not looking forward to doing the job but I am looking forward to the end result, especially if it turns out any where near as nice as yours.

Hello Bullitt.

Thank you for your kind feedback. Greatly appreciated. I am very happy with the results. Yes, preparing and doing it sucks, but the end result is well worth it.

I used an HVLP gravity feed spray gun with 2.0 tip to spray the epoxy primer. Instructions said to spray between 40 and 45 PSI due to the thickness of the primer. Also, I used a 3m cup system. It has an outer cup and an inner liner. As I use up the material the inner liner crushes in order to keep the material in the spray bowl of the spray gun This way when I spray in an upside down manner the material stays in the paint gun and doesn't run to the bottom of the cup.

This is the cup system I used.

The Raptor liner kit comes with it's own spray gun. This gun works on a siphon technique. I looked at several videos on YouTube on how to spray this stuff. Based on my research I decided to use the feathering technique. This means instead of keeping the triggered pressed and spraying until you pass your painted surface, you actually press the trigger for a short time and then release. Also, based on the desired pattern I was looking for I sprayed using 80psi. Yes, that is correct. 80psi. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing how people have used this product.

This is the gun I used.

Nice job it looks good. I can imagine it being a pain laying on your back and spraying it.

Hello Grabber. Thank you sir! I appreciate your feedback. Yes sir it was not fun LOL.

Oh, and to those thinking about doing this, I recommend that you wear gloves, a breathing mask and googles/eye protection. And a painting suit if you have access to one. I wore the eye protection and breathing mask only. I ended up getting my hands stained from the bed liner. Acetone nor lacquer thinner would take it off. Just FYI.

Wow Black Gold, thanks for the detailed reply! I have a couple of HVLP guns and I wwill look into the 3M system, it sounds like the hot ticket to spray overhead. I was thinking about using POR-15, what made you decide to use the Raptor Liner? i was hoping for a smoother finish as my car won't be driven much and my thinking was a smoother finish may be easier ti maintain.

What made you go with the Raptor Liner over Lizardskin?

Hey Bob. I actually used lizardskin on the inside of the floor pan and then put a Dynamate type material over the top of that. Lizardskin is used for heat resistance and sound deadening. So, I didn't want to use lizard skin on the outside.

The Raptor liner comes in several different colors. Lizardskin actually dries with a purplish hue to it. Also, Raptor liner is a lot tougher and meant to hold up to road debris. So, lizard skin and Raptor liner are used for very different purposes.

I think a full compliment of PPE is require when painting, especially overhead while laying on your back. not point in causing any damage to yourself for a hobby.

You're very welcome Bullitt!

I decided on Raptor because I wanted something that would hold up a little stronger than paint or other coating. Also, I think the textured finish will look good against the other under carriage items, such as exhaust, leaf springs, rear end housing, driveshaft, transmission, etc.

If you want a smoother finish you could actually spray Raptor liner through an HVLP gun using the 2.0 tip. Go on YouTube and look for some guys called Raptor liner jobs RGV. They actually spray Raptor liner through a spray gun. Then they put a vinyl graphic on the hood and then spray Raptor liner using the Raptor gun. They pull the graphic off exposing the smoother Raptor liner under the more extreme textured Raptor liner. Comes out looking pretty cool.

Actually I found it. These guys are young, but do pretty good.

Go to the 5 minuet mark to see what I'm talking about.

I do see what you mean, that looks pretty cool. there doesn't seem to be much overspray with the Raptor Liner and when he painted the side of the truck, he was a good distance away, very interesting. I will do some more looking into Rapor Liner. I might still do the POR-15 and see how that holds up, I can always respray with Raptor Liner after if I need too. I suspect this will be an ongoing project anywayas my vehicles never seem to ever be "done", there is always something to add or change.
