Hey y’all just a quick question, I have a fully built B headed 98 cobra all ported built etc.... what would you guys use for tuning? It’s mostly going to be a street car but track now and then. MS3PRO, AEM or the Holley? Also it has a 99-04 harness on it! Thank for the info y’all!

I think more info is needed before an answer can be given.

What has been done to the engine? Do you have forced induction/nitrous? Are you turning a lot of rpm?

What do you want to be able to control/adjust with the car?

Sometimes, stand alone systems are a 'nice to have' rather than a 'necessity'. A good tuner and a simple tune/ chip can accomplish a lot and be reliable.

I am not a tuner, but am speaking from personal experience.

I think it depends on what you want to be able to do and how comfortable you are doing your own tuning. I bought the MS3PROPNP Because I wanted to be able to tune it myself and If I screw it up and blow the engine because of the tune then there is no one to blame but myself. I am not looking to pull max hp just a Sunny Sunday car. I like to pull my own wrenches. I like the idea of being able to mod and tune on my own without relying on a tuner

I tuned with SCT for a long time. I switched to MS3 about a year ago. I'd say it was a step in the right direction. Tuning is much easier now. And having the ability to add extra inputs is nice as well.

A stock computer can handle a lot. But it requires some work arounds. I like not having to scale things to make it work within the limits of the stock ECU.

For a true street car that actually gets driven your best bet is always to stick with the stock ecu. Since you have a 99-04 harness on it already your already a step ahead. Simply tune it and be done.

The stock ecu can be self tuned if desired and the custom tuning software is free. No need to rely on a tuner.

Some outdated info in here as well. You can add extra inputs and outputs to the stock ecu. The stock ecu's no longer have any scaling limits with my latest releases.

I guess my car that gets driven on nice days (and some not so nice going by the rain spots), made a trip to Vegas this past weekend (roughly 600 miles), and has seen the track once in the last year isn't a street car because it has a stand alone. Good to know.

Can you add knock sensors and have flex fuel capability with the stock ECUs now? If so that's pretty cool.

While I totally admit I'm not a tuning pro by any stretch of the imagination, I have done enough tuning to learn I like what makes my my life easier. If I had done a 2.3 and kept the returnless system I would've stuck with the stock ECU as I wouldn't have had plans to go bigger. Well, I have plans to go bigger and the stand alone makes that easier.

What if it's a 15psi setup with 7500rpm as the target? I've heard of guys having to tailor their setups to work around the rpm limit of the factory ECU. Something about the stock unit not having enough processing speed to work at such high rpm.

I've spoken with some reputable tuners who say it's possible.

Personally, if I had an NA set-up, I'd stick with the factory ECU.

I have a FI set-up at 23#, but with OE Ford cams. It only spins to 6500. I am considering custom cams and turning 7500rpm. At that point, I will switch to a standalone system. With the added cylinder pressure and rpm, precision is crucial.

Is this a turbo or supercharger setup?
