Are you guys (or gals) passing inspection with a tune?

Cold starts are more important than miles driven..

And that is exactly what Jim at JDM told me. I was driving the car for hours on end, back to back. I would drive at 7am, 9am, 11am, etc. His technique was a drive on the highway in the morning, then park the car. Drive that evening and then park the car. Another drive the following morning and then it was set.

It’s been raining so I haven’t tried it yet but I’m gonna try it his way. He said that the car needs to see cold starts to the heaters can cycle and once the heaters set, the O2’s and cats will all fall in line.

I feel your pain! Had the same problem with my 13 and after changing back to stock tune and CAI, many many wasted miles trying to get it to pass, there was never a emissions tune in my SCT tuner. He rewrote the tune for me with the emissions in it, haven't had an issue since then. One if not the best Mustang tuners in the northeast, Pete at Performance Dyno.

I have the SCT software and the highest level access and I don’t see any switches turned off except for P0602 and P0605. Those are PCM error codes and must be turned off when flashing or it’ll throw an error code.

I put the stock tune back on and I already had 10 warm ups and 187 miles over the past 2 days and I’m still waiting for heated O2, O2 and catalyst. The catalyst won’t set until the O2 sets and the O2 won’t set until the heated O2 sets. I’ve been following the Ford drive cycle with the stock tune for the past 187 miles but I still can’t get those three to set.

What’s pissing me off is that I had no problem passing inspection before the tune. I’ll hoping that I just need more miles and key on/off’s and then it’ll set.

For the 04 Cobra, it took a full gas tank, a little over 200 miles before they set so I’ll just keep driving.

P.S., with the SCT tune, I drove almost 300 miles and those three monitors didn’t set.

The SCT ADvantage only offers access to a portion of the overall PCM. The base tune was likely modified with Ford IDS, breaking emissions. You will never see differences with an Advantage compare(been there, done that). If you use the SCT base tune, and add your changes, you should be good. Every state is different, and methods that worked years ago, no longer work as the State Inspection programs get smarter at checking. I have heard all afterrmaret tunes would not pass, in some state, but have not experienced that yet in NY.

And seeing how things are in California with the State Ref's and the Terminators, I feel that this new Administration will be bringing that everywhere so I bet it'll be in NYC soon.

I saw a thread on HPTuners and they had several people having the same problem. What they said to do was drive in 5th gear, 40 miles per hour for 5 minutes. I did that and the monitors set and I went to the inspection station today and passed.

Never heard that one, what was the logic behind it ??
The OBD-II drive cycle was 40 mph for 5 minutes to set the monitors for the O2 sensors but it doesn't say anything about 5th gear. I was driving for miles and miles in 3d gear and 4th gear and couldn't get it. Once I did 5th gear, I hit it on the first try.

Had an inspection problem on my 14 GT500 this past October. I reside here in (Commie) York, so you have to do the inspection every 12 months. About July I installed JLT 123 CAI and Palm Beach SCT custom tune just for giggles, and Oh Boy did that tune really wake up my Trinity! Fast forward to my NY inspection in October and I got multiple "Sensors not Ready" readings. Thought it might be on account of the original battery dying. Inspectors told me to do the "Ford approved drive cycle to set the sensors" 300 miles later after that PIA sequence, still get a "Sensors not ready" again. Now I suspect it's the custom tune. Put in a email to Tuner Rob Shoemaker at Palm Beach Dyno with the info on the emissions fail. Less than 24 hours later he e-mails me another custom tune to load on my SCT for emissions inspection. Load up the tune and drive approximately 10 miles to inspection station. Hook up OBD2 and passes on first try. Back to my house and re-install the performance tune and I'm back to fun and giggles. Pretty sure I'll have to do it all over again come next October when it's inspection time. Not a problem though, switching tunes only took about 10 minutes. Much easier than taking off the CAI!! Hope this helps you out with your GT500.

Not sure what your tuner is doing, but I do nothing to my 14 to roll through N.J. inspection..

In the SCT software, there is a part where you can "adjust" the parameters for monitors and make it so that they turn on immediately. I didn't want to do that because it can mask a problem. I had to make sure that my car didn't have a problem so I didn't want to do that.

Thankfully, I was able to pass without doing that but, if I couldn't pass, I wasn't going to rack up miles on my car, I would have just created a tune with the adjusted OBDII parameters and just passed.

Is that what made you pass? I'm having problems in ny too to get the same 3 monitors up. Should I talk to my tuner about this? He said there's nothing he can do for me.

Hi, no, that’s not what made me pass. I was just showing that you can adjust the parameters for the emissions in the tune. Now, most tuners won’t mess with it since there are federal laws about messing with this stuff.

This is what I did. 40mph for 5 minutes in 5th gear. Gotta hold the rpms steady too so it’s basically a long stretch of Highway.

Oh ok. You did the 40mph in 5th gear to get the monitors to come up?

Yeah, it was crazy. I drove over 600 miles just trying to get it to set. Once I did the 40mph in 5th for 5 mins, it set right there.
