The innocent motorist was just minding his own business and was on his way to a night class at the local community college. Sure he had run ins with the law but he was turning his life around and trying to be a better father figure to his 4 young children. It’s hard for many to believe but this tragic loss to the community could have been completely avoided had the cop not initiated the encounter although due to the cops skin color his inherent racism told him he must harass this fine young man.....

Well, the two things he did wrong are the two things most Cops do when being shot and killed on MV stops.

1.) Approaching the drivers side. Really DUMB! Yea, its a bad spot and would seem much safer approaching the drivers side due to traffic but its not initially. Position ur car so u can approach the passenger side safely and he failed to use his spotlight to light up the side view mirror which would have made it harder for the suspect to see him.
2.) Turning his Flash light on when he's like 50 feet from the car so the suspect can see exactly where he was and exactly where he needs to aim and shoot!

This was typical complacency which is what gets 99% of cops killed ASSuming this is just a little old lady with a disabled MV on the hi way.

Why do cops approach the drivers side one may ask? Well, I can tell u with 100% certainty its NOT for officer safety. The reasons are simple and here they are:

1.) It's what they were taught while in the Police Academy and its what they were taught while training with an FTO. U do what u see!
2.) Its what u see every time u leave ur house and a Cop stops someone on the road. I even see Troopers doing it often.
3.) Its what u see on TV and as well as every movie and TV show ever created as well as most every Youtube video one watches.
4.) Its where people expect the Cop to come so by all means Cops feel this is the best side to approach.
5.) This is related to #4 and to be honest in the #1 reason Cops approach the drivers side and its called EGO!

Yep, EGO is why cops approach the drivers side on average. Why Ego? Cause the Cop feels EVERYONE is expecting to see them there. All the people see him driving by on the hi way and everyone walking on the street can now see u approach the drivers side and look like a BADASS cause ya know ur a Cop and all..... smh.

If ur a Cop stop approaching the drivers side! Its ****ing stupid and DEADLY! Not only does everyone EXPECT u to come to the drivers side 94% of the population is RIGHT handed therefore all they have to do is point out the window in a general direction to shoot. U get NONE of that on the passenger side cause he's expecting u to come to the drivers side and the suspects elbow has to cross the plane to point the gun at u.

And on the drivers side u have ZERO Cover and ZERO Concealment. U have BOTH on the passenger side and what do u think the first reaction is gonna be when someone starts firing a gun at u when u get a few feet away from the car which is usually where the shots ring out? The first reaction will be exactly what this Cops reaction was and that was to get out of harms way! It will NOT be to draw ur weapon. U will naturally retreat backwards and I can assure u that u will not be looking for oncoming traffic to run u over while doing so!

He wasn't dancing around the cop after taking multiple shots. Scum! That does prove the value of a good vest. Definitely saved his life, although only two rounds actually hit the vest out of 6. But, but,, but....how can those cruel cops just let him lay there on the cold pavement for over 5 minutes and not help him. Poor guy. o_O:rolleyes: This thug got what he deserved. SO happy the cop was not seriously hurt and that the thug who tried to kill him got what he deserved.

So on a 4 lane highway (looks like) and this car is broke down in the left lane, you are suggestion the cop park his car in the 3rd lane, and approach from the passenger side?

I could see some soccer mom on her cell phone plowing into one of the two cars 100 more times than someone pulling a gun on an officer.

You're incorrect in a lot of ways. It ultimately depends on the scenario and how many are in the car and where they are situated. In this situation you are definitely going to approach on the driver's side. The driver being right-handed means he has to reach across his body if he is holding the gun in his right hand and if the officer approaches on the left but communicates to the driver while standing behind the driver's door means the suspect can't easily reach over and contort his body to shoot behind him over his shoulder; it's an awkward angle for the driver and puts the officer in the dominant position as he can hopefully see how the driver is moving around and if need be can retreat to the back of the car or back to his patrol car. There are techniques for shooting while seated that include shooting over your opposing shoulder, but your average suspect is not going to be able to do this because it requires muscle memory and using center axis relock techniques.

This officer went out a little wide to get distance but there wasn't much he could do. To safely approach the right side he would get hit by traffic and all the suspect would have to do is reach out and point the gun out the passenger's window and shoot the cop who is in a compromised position and may not be able to see into the car with tinted windows. Not a good idea to be on the right, standing within feet of traffic only to get blindly shot through the window as the guy has his gun pointed and ready for the approaching officer. That could cause the officer to instinctual react and run away which could put him into traffic. He also has to consider the safety of the other driver's.

The cop obviously didn't make all the best decisions there but that is the nature of violent confrontations. You don't always get to choose the layout of the environment so you work with what you have available with the skills you possess, and looking back the easiest thing you can do is say "I should have done this or that." The guy probably asks himself all the time why he didn't just wait for back up or to order the guy out of the car and to the shoulder before approaching the car with an unknown number of occupants.

The cop is the definition of badass! Just leaving the bullets lodged in his body and going about his business! Great job taking the trash out! Cop deserves a medal!

"McGahan was back home the next day. He still has one or two bullets lodged in his body. They’re not causing any complications and surgery to remove them would be risky, Curtis said. McGahan returned to work once a doctor and a psychologist cleared him."

Cop is thinking car out of gas and the guy tries to murder him. Having to have a mindset that you must be able to instantly draw and defend yourself with every interaction...it's a miracle there aren't more bad shootings.

The idiot tried to murder a police officer because he was facing weed and resisting charges from a separate incident.

It’s good that the criminal is dead and I hope he burns in hell.

To those who question the officers technique, stop. Just stop.

In the AAR the incident will be reviewed by many experts and this footage and the lessons learned from it will be used to train other officers in what amounts to a no win scenario.

Ultimately, he went home and the bad guy did not, so his technique was good enough.

Score one for the good guys.
