Powder coating calipers

So I stumbled across a full resto shop down the road from my house today and notcied they did powder coating. The guy quoted me $50 to do my calipers(torch red) which is way to good to pass up.

My question for you guys that have had it done is; is it necessary to disassemble the calipers to keep from damaging them in the oven? The ovens cook at around 400 degrees and our brakes can reach that temp pretty easy. Dot3 boils at 401 degrees and countless people have boiled break fluid without any adverse effect to the caliper them selves.

I took mine completely apart but that was because I was planning on rebuilding them with a new seals and everything anyway. My seals were all pretty bad at 46k miles. 10 years is a long time for that rubber it seems.

But, you can just have them coated and baked fully assembled if you want. Tons of people do that with no ill affects.

I did mine color matched too.

Plan on doing this during the winter. I painted them last year and just not happy with the lasting results.

Those look great on on your sonic blue:rockon:. I have never liked anything but torch red on a black car myself.

Hopefuly someone that has had them done assembled will chime in with some pointers/warnings.

I did a 03/04 cobra brake conversion on my foxbody and took them all apart. Plan on powder coating calipers on the cobra over the winter as well.

$50 is way cheap. Almost, scary cheap. Has he done calipers before?

I fully disassemble all of my calipers before I powder coat them. Kind of necessary if you're going to media blast them like you should. Good time to rebuild them with all new seals too. I've re-done lots of painted sets. The finished product looks night and day different.

They come apart easy enough. For the fronts, blow compressed air in through the banjo bolt hole with some blocks of wood in the caliper. I use 1/8" sheets of aluminum so I can remove one at a time to slowly get the pistons all the way out.

I've got a nice little 90* pick that I use to remove the dust boots and piston seals.

I charge $200 to do front '03-04 Cobra calipers and the mounting brackets. That's fully disassembled, masked and media blasted, cleaned, powder coated your choice of colors. You get to pick the color of the "COBRA" letters too. Also a powder coated clear coat. They I re-assemble them with all new seals.

I charge $150 to do the rear calipers and mounting brackets. This also includes rebuilding with new seals.

Good info, Joe, and an excellent job with the powder coating. Those look really nice with your Sonic Blue paint.

I don’t do coatings for svt members anymore. There were tons of issues.

the rears come apart easy and can be put back together with either a cube thing or a rear brake tool from harbor freight or something. The rear pistons screw back on.

Just curious. Are you still doing coatings outside of SVTP? I think I remember your services. Does your wife work with you and handles the customer service/orders? Or am I thinking of someone else?
