its 225 for the programing, another pcm is about 250ish then to also program or "recalibrate" another 225..or $1000 bucks to register in another state and do whatever i want..

How often do you drive the car?

Having 2 pcm one for smog and one for your mods would be a good idea, just remember to swap a month before due so you can trigger all the readiness monitors

1) both ecu's need programmed for the car. PATS needs programmed at a minimum or the car won't start. For emissions the VIN needs to match too. So you would need a second, identical ecu.

2) everytime you pull the ecu you will need to complete the obd2 drive cycle to clear all emissions monitors prior to testing. This is not an easy process.

3) registration out of states especially a near by state is very risky. It's usually a massive fine if caught. Also, insurance can be finicky about a vehicle registered in one location and stored elsewhere.

Until you get pulled over once or twice with tags that don’t match your drivers license and possibly open another can of worms.

Sidebar: Did you have any gauges when you went for inspection? I’ve seen posts that some refs have no tolerance on those. I have to go myself...

Presuming you're tuned, can't your tuner adjust the tune to get around Ca. snooping ??

They can determine if the tune is stock or not. And for a tune to be legal it must come with a carb eo number.

IE, my friend has a California car. He has an edelbrock blower on his 2018 GT mustang. He is running the canned edelbrock tune because it is carb legal.

The land of commies and socialists!
thought of that too but unfortunately idk anyone in those areas.

Got to love how the state cracked down on that loophole. It used to be simple but now they want a damn bill in your name and P.O. boxes won't work either.

There has to be a work around for this situation. The problem however is that once its found it will become public knowledge and the state will eventually figure that out too, and so continues the game of cat and mouse.

Which costs as much as ford programming the ecu and increase the ease of stealing the car.

If he's getting a tune for the second ECU then all he's paying is the cost of the tune. Versus getting the ECU flashed by Ford then getting the tune done. So he would actually be saving money if he went that route.

As for stealing the car, if someone wants it they're going to get it. PATS or not.

Then why lock the doors at all?

The ecu in the car is tuned. So the new one is the stock, swap out I thought?
