Buffing equipment

Im in the market for a buffer. Never used one before since I was always washing and waxing by hand.
I think over time it needs it now.
Any recommendations on buffer, pads and compounds, sealants or waxes.
Post some pics of before and after if you have them

I'd look at the Griot's G9. Excellent machine, good power, easy to use, perfect for a beginner IMO. Lifetime warranty and a great price point. Their pads/products will work wonders for you.

I just bought one of harbor freights Bauer long throw da's last weekend and have zero complaints so far. Just finished doing as good of a paint correction as i could on my 96 considering the hack paint job it has. Bought it after using a friends on a different car and was very impressed. I haven't used a Griots g9 but i'm happy with my purchase so far.

There are a lot of different machines on the market. The better ones are made by Rupes, Flex etc.
If you are using the machine on a regular basis I'd suggest a better machine.

If you are rarely polishing or applying wax then a lightweight machine will be fine.
These are the Porter Cable 7424xp and Griots 6" polisher (the GG has more power)

IMHO the Harbor Freight machines are a Chinese knock-off of the better machines.

NOTE: A lightweight machine will take longer to polish out defects (swirl marks etc.) but it is a safer machine.
For a newbie, I might suggest the Porter Cable 7424xp. It will take longer. It will do the work, and it is safer.
If you decide to go with a PC then I would suggest a 5" backing plate DBP5 IMHO a 5" BP works best on a DA.

Pads:
Meguiars has "Thin" DA pads that work well

DBP5- 5" Soft Buff DA Backing Plate
DFC5- 5" Soft Buff Foam Cutting Disc
DFP5- 5" Soft Buff Foam Polishing Disc
DFF5- 5" Soft Buff Foam Finishing Disc

For heavier defects I would suggest Meguiar's DMC5 DA 5" Microfiber Cutting Disc



Compounds for a "newbie"
Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Meguiar's Ultimate Polish. These are fairly safe for a newbie.

Sealants and Waxes
The choices here are too numerous to mention.
Waxes apply every 2-4 weeks (great "look")
Sealants apply every 2-4 months

Ceramic Spray Coating
A new favorite of mine is Lithium Ceramic Slam Spray coating

I started with a Porter Cable 7424xp. I burned it up after 7 years of weekend fun.


Griots G9 RANDOM ORBITAL POLISHER w 6" backing plate and a 5" backing plate. The 5" allows me to use my already existent 5.5" hex pads

Griots G8 MINI RANDOM ORBITAL POLISHER with 2" and 3" backing plates.

Lot of great info here from all the responses. I bought a Maguires set up when I was at Sema about five years ago. It was $200, came with microfiber pads and foam pads(microfiber for heavier cutting) I use their pink correction compound on heavy swirls, followed by Maguires polish then Maguires wax. The polish will take care of small swirls then it needs a protectant, so your choice of wax or ceramic. It’s effective, harder to burn through a clear coat than a high speed buffer, doesn’t create the heat of a high speed either. I use a LED light to follow the scratches till I have them gone as it highlights them better. I am not a pro but have had great results
I color sanded from 800 to 2500 on my bike fender to get out pits from the seat suction cups. About 10 minutes with the pink correction compound, 2 minutes polish, then we added a clear bra over it.

I think for my budget for car care which is basically nothing the Griots G9 kit will serve me well.
If I get better at doing it I'll step it up to the stronger ones you guys suggested.
Between Buying some guns, ammo, fishing and hunting supplies my fun money is tapped. Also saving for a newer truck.
Anyone have a Tundra TRD Pro crewmax they want to sell me?
O Dam forgot to put in for new tires in the rear.

Something to think about when buying a buffer is how long you want the cable to be/if you will be using an extension cable of a certain length. I can't speak for the Griots buffer as I have not used it, but I do know for many buffers you need to make sure that your wire gauge is appropriate for your desired cable length. The importance of this would be proper performance and preventing premature wear on things like your motor. Sometimes these buffers come with their own information about gauges at certain lengths. You could also message Griots directly to ask. They may be able to install a longer cable from the get go or recommend the gauge size for your extension cable length desired.

Personally I prefer a 6’ cable on my machines.
I find the long cables a PITA. I prefer to use a quality extension cord.
This way I can put the cord over my shoulder.
For me, the long cord is a inconvenience for you to store.

Ok so I purchased the G9 as a beginner buffer and some new products See pics. minus my washing supplies and other products
I even went the extra step to ask each company I purchased products from to let me know the steps start to finish.
Unfortunate enough I recieved different responses. See responses
My normal hand detail is
Wash
Clay bar
polish
wax

The new steps with the buffer...let me know your thoughts also please.

Wash
Decontaminate iron wash car and or spray rims also
Clay bar
Buff with correcting cream
Buff with Finish cream
Spray off with detail cleaner
Apply ceramic quartz
let cure for 24 hours.
Please put your wisdom in to help me complete the second process.

1.) Wash, Ferrous/Iron decon, clay. Rinse/wash again if you wish.

2.) Correcting cream if necessary, Perfecting cream.

3.) You will need to do a wipe down prior to applying your coating. (I use Optimum paint prep) you will need this or similar. This will remove any polishing oils/contaminants from the paint prior to coating to ensure the coating adheres properly.

4.) Coat the car.

(don't spray off with detail spray as it most likely has glossifiers in it and that will not play well with your coating)
