OTA pipes - high temp insulation tubes/wrap?

So I recently picked up the LTH over axle pipes for my 2014 GT. I chose these over the Borla because I figured the two piece design would be easier to install than the single piece design on the Borla.

I did notice the Borlas come with “high temp insulation tubes” and I read in a couple of threads that changing from the OEM OTA pipes can put them closer to the fuel lines.

To be on the safe side, I would like to add something similar on the new OTA pipes. Has anyone seen anything available individually for sale? Or could I use something like an exhaust insulation wrap or something like this?

Thanks

Hmmm, I dont think my Borla pipes came with those. If they did I never put them on. I was under the car two weeks ago and I dont recall these being close to any fuel lines or any lines. If you are concerned with the heat buy some header wrap and put it on the area you are concerned with.

I have Bassani, there is no insulation on mine either, they have been on since May of '14, within a week of getting the car.

Thanks for weighing in, guys. I think I’m going to pick up some of that header wrap and then do some measurements when I take the factory pipes out to see if I think I even need to use it with the new pipes.

I think you'll be safe without it, although if you are lowered it is easier to hit the aftermarket overaxel pipes with the axel and it might either deaden the blow or it use up some more of the little real estate you have for clearance between the two.
Let us know how it comes out.

Thanks. I am lowered but it’s not completely slammed (SR springs & Koni orange shocks in rear). Will update when I get things sorted out.

If your fuel line plastic covers are still intact, your biggest risk would be melting those. I have the Borla and have had no problems.

I found a few other threads where some folks had luck with header/exhaust wrap. I went ahead and used the stuff I had already bought…though I had to buy some hose clamps because the ones the wrap came with were too small.

It was pain but I got one side mostly done. Going to try and finish the rest of it today after work.

Driver side stock OTA compared to new one:

Finished up tonight. Took it for a drive and it seemed like everything is fine. I do want to double check the various bolts and clamps in a day or two though, just to be on the safe side.

Pretty happy with the sound. It doesn’t sound significantly louder but it is a little louder and it’s got a little snap, crackle, pop on downshifts…which is something I miss about the Roush setup I used to have (don’t miss the drone though).

matt5058,

Good work! Now you've got me thinking that i need to add some wrap to my OTA pipes. I don't see any signs of heat damage to the areas near the pipes but Borla wouldn't provide sleeves if they didn't think they were necessary, right?

Enjoy the enhanced sound of the exhaust. :)

I finished editing my video of the install process on these:

It wasn't the worst install ever but a lift would have been nice.

I'm pretty happy with the sound overall. I need to get some better audio clips but I think it's pretty close to hitting that sweet spot between the aggressiveness of the Roush and the tameness of just the GT500 ABs.
