Gap or no gap, a plug covered in oil suggests you've detonated in that cylinder and have broken the piston and or a valve. A cylinder not firing correctly will cause you to smell rich from the exhaust. There's your smell. The noises echoing through the exhaust is another clue something upstream is not right. A $50 borescope and 5 min of your time is better than $100+/hr for ford to dick you around some more. I only mention it because you were distressed about money in your last post. Good luck man.

Our factory manual is in here

large version for laptop/pc is what you need.
Hard copy is also good but doesn’t have this section of manual

PC/ED section of manual has everything you need to know on how it all works and how to test things

Many threads on here with new owners and issues.

these engines have head issues ,

these low miles cars just haven’t hit the time of use yet. When issues start.

worst part is that issue will just happen out of the blue.

There is a long story on head gasket causing some of these issues along with head design

4 thread original
9 thread 2nd design
Both for me dropped cylinder 6.

60k was about the time on both
Have 200k plus on the new head design

Than some sounds maybe different,
There is a recent thread on a new purchase, car sounded extremely bad

guy added a oil supplement and noises went away. This was after spending many dollars at FORD

good luck

I hope it's not a piston the previous owner placed a new head gasket
Bud, if you are unsure of how to swap plugs, maybe this car is not for you.
It was the first time I ever changed plugs not ashamed to say it I'm a young guy that has always had someone do stuff for me I'm sick of being a dummy when it comes to a car so I'll ask every dumb question till I don't have to nomore..

I just picked one up the screen quality isn't that great but I'm seeing a good bit of carbon build judging by yours I'm guessing you had melted piston ?
yessir all due to exposed wire on the COP (coil on pack) harness rubbing the valve cover that caused intermittent voltage drop to the fuel pump starving cylinders 7, 8 at wot..

Im hoping for the best but after seeing the gas oil smell at the end of the spark plugs and weird idle looks like I might be joining the melted piston gang what new pistons did you go with ?
