Can I swap just the Torsen center section into my 2008? Is it a simple swap or is it more involved? I have a complete 2013 rear end but I am thinking it would be easier to swap the center sections vs. the entire rearend. Any advice appreciated. Thank you

It’s a simpler swap for IRS models. I don’t know how much work is involved with your solid axle, but I can say swapping the entire rear end is pretty darn simple. And, in theory, you wouldn’t even have to worry about sealing anything up or gear oil.

If they both currently have the same gears 3.31. Just do complete rearend swaps. Will be easier. Otherwise youll will need to set pinion and back lash.

The new rear end has a 3.73 gear. The new rear end has the larger brakes calipers and rotors that came with that model year as well, although they are disassembled. I just thought swapping the center section would be quicker/easier but am unsure if there are any fitment issues with the axles or anything else.

What are you calling the center section? Just the differential without the gears? You can just swap the differential over, but you'll need to dial everything back in. That can be intimidating the first time around. If you have access to the entire axle I's swap that in and retune for the lower gears (which I'd consider a bonus).

I'm talking about the complete center section, third member, pumpkin - I guess everyone calls it something different, but the unit with the gears and all assembled. Just slide out the existing center section and replace with the 2013 center section. That way I don't have to fool with disconnecting brakes, shocks, control arms....

I think you are confusing the 8.8" with a 9" rear axle.
The 9" has a center carrier, removable as an assemble.
The 8.8" is assembled inside the axle housing. The ring gear carrier, Torsen, Trackloc, open, etc sets inside the axle housing. You have shims to set side bearing preload.
I would suggest swapping the complete '13 into your ride, less the brakes.
Do not open your brake lines. Unbolt the brake assembly from your axle and bolt them onto the '13 axle. Check the pinion flange and make sure they are the same.
Someone has probably done this swap and can advise of any other issues to be addressed.

Thank you- perfect answer. Yes, you are correct that I was thinking the 8.8 was like the 9” inch units I am very familiar with. I have never been into an 8.8.

My car has 184,000 miles and the rearend makes a lot of noise. I found a 2013 that was rebuilt and got it complete for a pretty cheap price, the guy was tired of it taking up space on his garage floor. The bonus is that it’s a 3.73 gear vs my 3.31.

Looks like I’ll be swapping the entire rear end.
