Okay Everyone,

I'm trying to make more progress on the car towards final assembly time. I'm getting really close to the end. I'm not trying to rush, but I am trying to work a little more often.

So, after work this week I have been working on some front end pieces. I'm trying to get them in primer so I can spray base coat and clear coat on them this weekend.

Here is a peek at what I'm talking about.

Here you can see my headlight bezel. If you look at the side you can see a rough looking texture. That is overspray from when it was sprayed on the car last time and the painter could not get proper coverage. This goes back to a contributing factor on why I just wanted to repaint the whole car.

You can see that same rough texture on the underside of the top corner.

It's a little hard to see, but on the side facing the camera you can see a run on the lip.
20220304_155155.jpg

Here it is dry sanded by hand with 400 grit and it's ready for primer.

Here you can see the rough texture is sanded out.

Same here. Rough texture sanded out.

Set up on some brake cleaner cans and a stir stick to keep the part suspended. I cannot have it touching anything where it will be painted or the clear will dry between the bezel and holder and cause a problem when I try to pick it up.

Have you gotten any updates on the intake lately?
I talked to Dave about a month ago. He took a deposit and said he would have his guys see if the plans they have on file will fit mine.

He said if they don't his guys would have to make some new plans in CAD and then get them cut in the CNC machine.

I have a reminder set to call or email him next week Tuesday to get another update.

I'll let you guys know what he says. But he did tell me originally that once the process started it would take a couple months. I'm currently at the 1 month mark. He said he only has 2 CNC machines.

Holy Crap. They do exist out in the wild!!!

I was driving to work this morning and came up on this.

Pretty cool for sure.

View attachment 1740393

That is so funny. I got my 68 on the road and the first drive I did I ran into another 68 coupe at a stoplight. Haven’t seen a classic mustang in months around these parts. Then you run into a mustang with a similar color to yours, what are the odds.

That spec chassis is so nice. Maybe one day.

We have a lot of the same stuff going on in our cars like hydraulic clutch, Manuel trans, 9” rear I went with a crate 347 with a carb because fuel injection intimidates me compared to a carb.

Have you bled the hydraulic clutch yet? I ended up having to buy a vacuum pump and had to suck any air bubbles out. The kit came with a syringe and instructions to force flush the system and it just didn’t work for me. So far that was the biggest pain in the ass.

You are going to have so much fun driving that thing, and be ready to talk about it anytime you take it out.

Edit-that one you saw in the wild has my matching peeling clear coat on the trunk lol.

Glenn, I've been following your build from the start. As with your 1:18 scale craftsmanship, you've managed to take on this monumental task with the same poise, precision and attention to detail. As for questions at the car shows, put a binder together with start to finish pic's with a brief description per page. You can also have a Show Board made with a collage of build pictures. Again, great job on an extremely well done project. Enjoy that bad ass ride.

WOW! You guys really are too kind.

@ToddW702 it is funny how our builds have unintentionally aligned. It is also funny that as soon as you take your car out you see another one. I work a lot from home, but do go to the office 2 or 3 times a week. The other funny thing is I took a different route to work that day. So, it's almost like it was meant to be that I see that car. It did look old and worn out, but it sounded really healthy and when I drove by him I noticed he had some pretty nice gauges installed. So, he may have been going for the patina look.

Yes sir, I have bled my hydraulic clutch. After I got it set up I did it the old school way. I was under the car and had my wife depress the clutch pedal. Then I would crack the bleeder valve. Did it this way until my wife said the pedal felt firm. Even though the car is not running right, when it was up in the air and I had it started I checked my clutch. I depressed the clutch and put it in gear. No problems. I slowly released the clutch pedal and it grabbed and my rear tires started to rotate. No leaks, no funny sounds, no grinding in the transmission, so it seems it's working fine. Will need to test drive it to know for sure though.

@Skitzerman WOW!!! What an amazing post! First off I would like to say thank you Vince for going along for the ride with me on this build and my diecast builds greatly appreciate! Secondly those were some amazing words in your post brother. I cannot thank you enough for posting in my build thread and saying those great things. Really cool to know that's how you see this build.

Once this build is completed I may need another project, so a build binder may be the way to go. I have seen those show boards, but I really don't know where to go to have one made. That's something I'll have to do some research on. Thanks again Vince!!!

@CobraBob Thank you Bob! I think I get those things from my Dad. I grew up in a military family/environment. I had a lot of discipline growing up. It wasn't bad and it wasn't like a Gestapo environment, but there was a lot of structure and rules. Do what you are supposed to do and there were no issues and plenty of fun to be had. Break the rules and deal with the consequences.

I watched my Dad as I was growing up and used him as my example. He always showed me that when you do something you do it right and don't half ass it. Once I turned 18 I joined the Army myself. Basic training was a breeze for me. A few struggled because they thought they could do things there way or on their time line. WRONG LMAO!!!

So, I believe in doing something to the best of my ability and have put that work ethic into this build. The road may have been extended by a year, but I think the results will speak for themselves and with the comments you guys have been making here I believe they may already have.

If I said it once, I've said it a thousand times... I really enjoy the feedback and discussion in this thread. Thank you all!!!

BTW Bob, this sums it up for me my friend LMAO!!!!

Okay Everyone,

I got some stuff done yesterday, but didn't have time to post up.

I got my front end parts painted and clear coated.

I also got my radiator cover fixed up too.

Here you can see everything laid out on the table. However, it is too cluttered to paint properly. So, I will do some painting and then you will notice I move things around.
20220305_112408.jpg

Here is a close up of the die pressed area. Due to it's shape I was unintentionally sanding an area while trying to get the run out and burnt through. This happened in a few spots/areas.
20220305_112416.jpg

Here the burn through is on the bottom edge.
20220305_112431.jpg

I only put paint over the burn through areas. This left me with some nice clear on the rest of the radiator cover. I will clear coat over the entire radiator cover and this should give me a really nice layer of clear to cut and buff.

20220305_124251.jpg

And here it is back in clear coat. It was a little windier than I like, but I had to get it sprayed. So, there is a little more trash in the clear, but it will cut and buff out. I'll be sure to stay off the edges and die pressed areas when I do this. This radiator cover was holding me up on assembly. I need to install this before I can install the fenders (It's just easier this way). I need to install the fenders before I can install the hood. So, you can see my assembly dilemma here LOL.

Did I mention I love to spray clear? LMAO!

Here are the headlight bezels, grill opening support and the QTR panel extension that had the paint reaction.

The only items remaining that need to be painted are the headlight buckets and the rear bumper and then I will be finished with the painting. Phew LOL....

Here the parts are situated and ready for base coat.

20220305_112458.jpg

Well, guess what? After my first coat of base coat the bottom of this headlight bezel had a small reaction. Guess it's par for the course on this build LOL. So, I sanded it out with 1000 grit. Then I sprayed sealer on it. Once it dried I put a couple light coats of base coat and it held. I can deal with small set backs like this. Where I can fix it during the painting process. So, time to press on LOL.

Here you can see that the base coat held up. Looks good and it's ready for clear coat.

This is the QTR panel extension that had the reaction last time. I sanded it all the way down to bare metal and built it back up. Good to go now.

And lastly it was time for clear coat.

I actually purchased a min spray gun made by Sagola (same as my big spray gun) with a 1.2 tip. I learned that a 1.2 tip will atomize the clear more and cause a better spray out with less orange peel. I thought I would try it on these smaller parts. There is less orange peel, but there is still some. So, I will need to cut and buff these parts, but it should not take as long to get the orange peel out. However, I am VERY happy with how this gun worked overall.

Now the bottom of these bezels are looking the way they should have :D (y) .

If you look close at the bottom edge, towards the right side of the picture, you will see a run. I can sand it out when I cut and buff it. This looks 1000% better than it did the last go-round. Very happy with the overall results.

Man, these bezels look great. Can't wait to get the front end assembled with all these freshly painted parts. But, still have more work to do first LOL.

Okay Everyone,

Took it easy today. I can't paint as it is way to windy today. Besides, I'm really not in the mood to do any sanding right now. I've had my fill this week LMAO!!!

So, I decided to do something fun.....

So, I installed my hood hinge spacers.

I only took one picture at the end. These things work great and look much better than the washers I had in there LOL.

Wow. Great work man.
Looks killer.

Thank you Tones. You know it's actually kinda fun doing this. My wife bought me some wireless Bose headphones for my birthday last year. I have a heavy metal/hard rock playlist set up on my Spotify account. So, I put my headphones on and jam the whole time I'm working. Makes the project seem a little easier while I rock out LOL. \m/!!!! I guess that's another reason I don't stress out when there's a reaction in the paint or something goes wrong LOL.

However, I do have to admit it's a little embarrassing when my wife goes in the garage and catches me during an air guitar solo ROFLMAO!!!

What? You guys actually thought all I did was install some spacers???? LMAO.... You guys know me better than that.

Since I was working on the spacers you knew I had to see what the hood looks like on the car now that it has completely dried.

It has not been cut or buffed yet, but I couldn't resist.

Here it is from the underside aspect. Man, this is what I was going for. Now the engine stands out more and is the focal point. SWEET!

This engine compartment is going to look even better once I get that radiator cover installed. Then when I add the Kindig air filter system on top of that...... Oh boy! LOL...
