If you have been following the progression of Melissa Urist’s 2015 Mustang GT, you know this car has always been at the forefront of 2015 Mustang GT performance. This Hellion Power Systems machine came out of the gate with 949 horsepower, ramped up to 1,135 horsepower and eventually put down over 1,400 horsepower to the rear wheels. Then it became the first 2015 Mustang to run in the 8-second range with a stock independent rear suspension.

As we now know, the independent rear suspension under the 2015 and newer Mustangs works pretty well for street duty and the occasional spirited driving. However, we you start to push things on the road course or drag strip, all the give build into the rear suspension to keep it quiet and free from vibration allows for more movement and less precision than is optimum.

Watson Racing rips off a pair of 8.70 passes in its IRS-equipped S550

When we last checked in with Watson Racing’s street/strip 2015 Mustang project, the car had run the first 8-second e.t.’s in an S550 with an independent rear suspension, but the company wasn’t satisfied with those runs. That’s right, Chuck Watson Sr. was able improve upon his 8.90-second passes by a full two tenths. This time he was running at nearby Milan Dragway and the conditions were quite favorable.

We are on the eve of the biggest Ford drag race of the year, the NMRA World Finals at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The air should be cool and the times should be quick. Curious about how its Mustang would perform on the big stage, Watson Racing took its street/strip SEMA project out for some test hits. It turns out those three test runs were the quickest runs yet for a 2015+ Mustang still running an independent rear suspension.

BMR Suspension details the benefits of its 2015+ Mustang IRS upgrade

When you launch the latest Mustang, the Independent Rear Suspension’s cradle actually moves on its soft rubber bushings. It moves a lot. And that can contribute to wheel hop and lost traction. To mitigate this problem, BMR Suspension developed its S550 IRS Cradle Lockout Kit (PN CB005; $159.95). This bolt-on system augments the existing IRS cradle bushings, which reduces the cradle movement without introducing additional noise, vibration, and harshness.
