Over the Summer we had a customer contact us from Sweden who had recently purchased a 2013 Shelby from Tasca Ford. The car was already fitted with a 4.0L Whipple but was otherwise stock. He said it was quoted to make 780 RWHP on pump gas but wanted more and also wanted a "bullet proof" engine so he would have no worries when he received it over-seas. So began the build process! We received the car in and removed the stock engine, upon tear down we found a few points of interest. It was a good idea he decided to build the engine as his head gaskets where showing signs of excess heat and between cylinders 5-6 the gasket was starting to lift between the bores. His spark plugs were ghost white and had aluminum transfer from the cylinder heads. The car was setup a little too aggressive with stock exhaust and fuel system at that power level.

We sent the heads out for machine work and began to rebuild the shortblock. With a .001" hone the cylinder walls cleaned up and we fitted custom diamond pistons in with a .0025" PTW clearance. Custom Total seal rings sealed up the bores and Manley Heavy Duty H beams were added for reinforcement. We used our custom Calico Coated bearings, New Main Hardware, and polished his original crank. With everything balanced the shortblock was assembled and we awaited the heads back from our machine shop.

With the heads back from a 5 angle valve job, Cam journal line hone, and cutting .005" off the deck to make sure the heads were perfectly true and straight we assembled the heads with NEW OEM valves, Custom PAC Racing Springs, and our Super Stock Camshafts, New retainers, Rockers, and Lash adjuster. All new Timing components, Heavy Duty Secondary Chains, ARP guide pins, Billet Crank and Oil pump gears, and a O Ringed Oil pump for improved internal oil pressure. Afterwards we covered the engine up with new gaskets, seals, and hardware.

The Whipple 4.0L was added back on top but this time with a set of Kooks Longtube headers and GREEN cats in tow. Now the beast was able to breath! With the efficienceny level of the Shortblock and our Super Stock cams we started off with a "break-in" tune starting at only 10 degrees of spark. With 93 octane in the tank the car put down 810 RWHP at 6,000 RPM. Barely putting the 4.0L Whipple to work at only 16 psi boost! After mixing in a little 100 octane we kicked it up a step and added 2 more degrees of spark for a total of 12 degrees max. It made 869 RWHP and 675 TQ at 6500 RPM seeing a peak of 17 psi this time! We approached the limits of the stock fuel lines and decided to stop there. With a proper return style fuel system and pure 100 octane in the tank we are looking at 1000+ RWHP. If we add any Boost, which the blower is capable of up to 30 psi, we are probably talking 1100-1200 RWHP. But that will have to go into the what-if's and maybe's folder because the customer is happy with 869!

The car is beautiful, very clean low mileage 2013 making 1000 HP and almost 900 RWHP on a pump gas mix! It's going to Sweden ready to do battle with any Demon, 2020 GT500, or Supercar for that matter! Look forward to hearing for our customer when he gets to drive it but for now it's been fun putting this build together for him.

Just wanted to share with you guys!

Thanks,

Interesting! I didn't realize you could lightly hone the plasma wire transferred bore linings in these blocks. How did the crosshatch look when you took it apart and how many miles did he have on that motor?

Cool build!

0.0025" ptw seems tight for a 4.0L blower.

Every Supercharged build even our Cobra Jets making 1400 HP run a .0025" PTW clearance. I'm pretty sure that is actually stock spec. We've never had any issues at that. Some people may go looser but your going to get wear and a noisy motor on cold start ups.
