So was there a tie from these to Merkur's?

Watched a Grand Tour episode where they discussed the Cosworth Cortina's.

Nice find. The Cosworth engine is legendary. Overall, that is a sweet Escort. The rear spoiler is THE strangest looking spoiler I've ever seen. THIS is a proper whale tail spoiler. (y)

I was looking on European classifieds and these were going for $50k+. Definitely one of the cars I would have in my collection someday and are certainly collectors items, akin to the Lancia Delta Integrale and Audi Sport Quattro although those cars are now going for quite a bit more right now. The RS200 is more in line with the Quattro for proce these days. Haven't seen an RS in the states yet but we do have quite a few Deltas that have been imported.

No. The closest thing was the Merkur XR4 which was Ford's attempt to bring the Euro Fords to the US but it failed so the Escort RS never made it. What could have been if they had just branded them as Fords and not tried to get all fancy.

@Alex_kingair it’s not about lowballers & dreamers, it’s about trusting the provenance of a pretty rare and desirable care, especially this side of the pond.

I would 100% be up for bidding, but the VIN stamp “screwed” in place, the entire interior switch-a-roo and just the general unknown history of this car will keep a couple of bidders sitting on their money until the next one comes up, but we all know, that could be quite a while

Good luck with the sale, the new owner will love the thrill of that big turbo swooshing into life like a rocket at 4k RPM!!!

Better question is why the hell did it take Subaru 10 years to bring over the WRX and STI.

I remember lusting for a Cosworth Escort in college and thinking the power output was insane. (Compared to a 190hp GSX and 225hp Mustang GTs).

Crazy how times have changed.

Merkur was suppose to be their own brand, my uncle that worked for Ford at Cleveland engine plant and Walton Hills stamping plant in his career (1954-94) was head of getting dies made and so was up to DOT and US spec for the Merkur twins, for crumple zones and crash testing and passing. It was suppose to be separate and so not have the headaches that the Pantera had back in the mid 70's where the Mercury dealers had no idea what they had and how best to sell it.

He really wanted a Scorpio, but my aunt his wife wasn't crazy abut the 150 MPH speedo it had as all she said it was a ticket magnet. He also said that when the salesman knuckles was turning white from gripping the top of the dash you was doing something right. As he the salesman had no idea what that car was, it was a BMW slayer, always liked the commercial of Jackie getting in back of one and reclining the seat back.

I guess it was logical at the time but hindsight is 20/20. No one wanted a car from a brand they didn't trust, especially back then. Or maybe Ford just needed to see it through and put more effort into building it. Seemed like they gave up pretty quickly compared to what brands go through today.

I remember the first RS200s I ever saw in person were in Vegas probably 15 years ago at the Imperial Palace car collection and they had a base model listed for $300k and an Evo listed for $350k. I imagine the base model is around the same while the Evo prices have skyrocketed. They had up to 650hp supposedly and a 0-60 in 1.9sec.

Ahhhhh! That was a cool video with Jackie in that comfy back seat. LOL.

I remember the Merkurs back in the day. They always intrigued me and I always wanted one, but I never pulled the trigger. Not sure exactly why, maybe because there were so many other cars that were more established.
