Plenty of Explorer STs running mid 500 WHP (E50 or E85 and a tune), getting hammered on constantly for several years with no issues.I haven't decided on the extreme yet, these 3.0 TT engines have no proven longevity. No doubt they put out power but how much for how long is the big question! Going with an ecu swap allows you more tuning options for aftermarket components imo. Those 2 bolt mains are concerning on how much abuse they can take outside the stock boost /405 hp rating.
The few that have issues come down to oil starvation. Because of the pick up and pan design, under heavy acceleration oil pressure is shown to drop. There is a company making an aftermarket oil pan that solves the problem. Or just stay on top of oil changes (5000 miles max) and add an extra quart at each change.
With that said, let this little motor eat. It seems like such a waste to handicap it with the Ford Performance tune. It's a little more pricey, but ZFG or Goosetuned will get you a tunable ECU and get you mid 400s AWHP (91/93) or mid 500s (E50)
