Out of curiosity why did Zach re-use the factory rods?

I don’t know a whole lot about the first and 2nd gen’s but were the rods anything special?

Stock rods are pretty damn strong... This is his old NA build. He has an O-ring'd, aluminum rod motor ready to go after we blow this motor. At that point we are going for 1,000whp.

He got the clutch done and took it for a spin...

The car will make some passes at Street Car Takevover - Atlanta this weekend. We'll see how it holds up... Traction will be an issue until we get the wheel speed sensors in to enable traction control.

For now, the 2-step is working. :)

Wish I had been into more FWD growing up, had one super bad experience with torque steer and it scared the shit out of me enough to never drive them again.

    Was an 875whp K24 CRX on a t66.

So, the car was actually running 27 PSI this when we started using the higher maps.

1st pass: Let out as he saw the hood pop - 11.5

    2nd pass @ 13 PSI:

    3rd pass @ a slow ramping 27 PSI:

4th pass @ faster ramping 27 PSI (but experienced drop and rise - The track produced loads we could not replicate on the dyno. Maps have already been provided to keep the boost flat - I will probably run 35 PSI on this motor if it keeps kicking)

I believe we'll see another 1320 Video feature on this car soon... :)

This should make for a good photo... I stole the video off of Kyle until they get some posted.

So the car will definitely go 9's on this motor. I can't imagine once we swap over to the aluminum rod and O-ring'd motor.

Saw your car at street car takeover and got a few clips of it. Sounded good and moved out for sure!

That last pass was on track for 9's, but the stock graphite gaskets have limited passes. It pushed two fire rings out of the way and sucked water, so this happened.

He's got new, copper gaskets coming and two rods to replace and we are still going to use this motor to get the firs 9!

Interesting car. My very first brand new car was a '86 Ford Taurus and it ended up being the BIGGEST POS I ever owned. I was getting towed every month or two with that junkheap.

Damn that is lucky it didn't snap the rods and window the block. You weren't joking. Those are really good rods.

Funny to see this on here. My friend Bradley just sent me the video of it at SCT. He is the owner of the red Neon. The Taurus is impressive and the best part about it is that its the only one out there running like that.

Zach knows him as well. It was a good race up to the 1/8, then someone lit the rockets.

The motor isn't done yet. It's going back together with some replacement rods and copper gaskets. We are pretty determined to run a 9 on this motor with mostly stock parts. I've made a few changes to the map... Actually have 9 maps for him based on what he wants to try. Hopefully it works out and the motor stays together. I would love to hit the goal and THEN give it a "sent it" map.

We went out to dinner tonight and he was showing me his new time slips. He went a 6.0 and a 9.04. He is getting so close to the 8s. I'm sure the Taurus will be well into the 9s soon enough.

Still at it. Zach towed the car from Atlanta to Denver, where I live to run Street Car Takeover with the intent to get the 9 second pass. First pass, he wanted me to raise the boost (22 ramping to 24 PSI above 6.5k RPM - we made 830whp at 20 PSI) and annihilate a 9 second pass... But we annihilated the clutch instead. We later found the transmission cracked and was putting fluid on the clutch.

To save the clutch, I brought the boost down to 15 PSI ramping up to 17 PSI and ran a 10.4 at 153 mph (at 8k+ ft DA!) with a bogged launch.

After this pass, we noticed low oil pressure. Turns out, and we knew it would happen, the stock replacement rod bearings couldn't take it. All of them were starting to deform. NOW, Zach is putting together the aluminum rod motor with race bearings and O-rings and trying to make Indy for SCT this weekend.

For reference, a test roll hit against my STi. I ran a 12.4 @ 112 in my STi on an 8,700 DA day and out of WGDC on my IWG and 3-port EBCS (hitting 2 PSI less than target).

The setup is a bit different now... Bigger turbo and custom intake manifold, plus proper cams (last set were shitty regrinds). It makes power easily now.

The Blue Turd ain't no turd, that's for sure. Looking forward to a new video with the new setup. Zack needs to change her name to the Blue Beast! LOL. Nice to see something different. I don't ever remember reading about a built older SHO, except here.
