Well just got home from the ER. I was playing in an adult league soccer game, fell on my shoulder and now have diagnosed with a mild AC seperation:whine::whine::whine: I will teel you this hurts like a son of a bitch. i have a decent bump on my shoulder now, on some great pain meds and anti-inflamatory meds.

I am making an appointment with an orthopedist tomorrow morning but i wanted to see if anyone here has had this happen before and what type of recovery time i am looking at at are there any problems i am going to have later on?

p.s. this sucks trying to type with only my left hand....

Is it on your dominant arm? Be careful with those pills, my friend did the same thing to his shoulder and thought he was healed enough to go skiing..... I forget how many operations he's had to have over the years for that.

yes it is my dominant arm. I plan on taking my time. i dont like taking pain meds very much and only plan to take them when i can't stand the pain anymore. I do a lot of running andwimming so i hope the swimming will be a good rehab.

Mild A-C separation means there wasnt disruption of all the ligaments of the Acromio-Clavicular joint. Usually an A-C brace is warranted along with anti-inflammatory drugs. Good luck.

^^^^^^^As stated above sometimes the A-C brace. Healing can take up to 6-8 weeks. Physical Therapy will be needed to get you back in shape. Do not use the arm before it is ready. Surgery can be a bitch and on a rare occasion does not cure the problem. Follow your Orthopedic's advice and plan of care and you should be fine.

What is an A-C brace? I am in just a regular sling right now. The doctor did notice a lump pushing out my shoulder which seems to indicate a type II or type III from what i have read, closer to a type III from the descriptions.

The Ortho I am gong to is not cut happy. I am going to do everything i can to avoid the surgery path.

Thanks for all the advice guys...

The lump is caused by the end of the clavicle lifting up over the acromion process of the scapula, hence the separation. There are three main ligaments that stablize the A-C joint and the amount of disruption of these ligaments will define the grade of separation. Visually you determine where the clavicle end sits in vertical proximity to the acromion to grade the separation. But any separation can give that "lump" appearance.

Here are a variety of A-C braces. In my opinion, a regular sling immobilizes but does not protect the joint.

just got back from seeing the ortho surgeon. it is a type III seperation. he does not want to do surgery, he has me setting up a PT session starting pretty much immediatey. i am going back in 2 weeks to see the dr. again. They are keeping me in the sling but have given me some stretches and static type arm placements to help with the pain and discomfort. their hope is that a month from now i should be well on my way and slowly getting back into things.

That brace looks like the brace they put me in when i broke my collar bone in my other shoulder years ago.

I just had a similar injury but not as severe. I finished up my meds and anti inflammatory drugs and thought I was just fine. Recently lifted something heavy and slightly aggravated it. Only lesson I learned was that I should have stayed off it longer then the DR advised.
