Some people in here talked about going this year. Is anyone planning on going to the Scottsdale auction in January?

I see the registration fee to be a bidder goes up $100 the first of December.

How about Barrett Jackson West Palm Beach instead as I have found the Scottsdale auction to be filled with people far crazier than I am  . March 28th through April 1st, 2007 if anyone is interested. :coolman:

I'm not going to get to go this year but I did get to drive Shelby GT#1 &#2 around last week. I know that #1 is already listed in the catalog as being up for sale.

I've got to go one of these years!

I think I better stay at home. An open bar and a car auction could put me in deep marital trouble. :-D

Bill,
What is your opinion on the market?

I don't remember ever seeing so many nice Shelby/Cobra/Boss cars FS. It seems to me the high prices are bringing a lot of inventory out?

Ads I've seen in the last week:
B-J Scottsdale: Lot#1325 '69 Boss 429; lot#1258 '67 Shelby; lot#1290 '69 GT500KR.
RM Ft. Lauderdale: three Shelbys
Russo Scottsdale: '69 Shelby GT500 (1 of 1 'vert drag pac.); three Shelbys and two Cobras
autocollections.com (Vegas) '68 Shelby GT500KR
Mecum (FL): '63 Cobra DragonSnake
copleymotorcars.com (MA) has a bunch of Fords
familyclassiccars.com (CA) '70 Boss 302, and a bunch of Mustangs
symbolicmotors.com (CA) '65 Cobra, a '65 Shelby, a '69 Shelby GT500

I got a mailing on this. I'd never heard of them.

Doc,

I'm not Bill.:coolman:

BUT, I think you are asking a very relevant question right now. I agree, I am seeing a lot of inventory out there for sale since people are spending stupid money on some of these muscle cars. Reminds me of the 90s when the bottom fell out. I think we might be seeing the high point of the market right now. I don't see how people can keep pumping the large amounts of money into cars they are as of late.

Pardon me while I ramble a bit in my pre caffienated early morning state of mind.

As with last years sell off of a larger number of 50-60's Corvettes at both the Scottsdale and WPB BJ auctions, this years flavor is the vintage Fords. Mustangs, Shelbys, Boss 302/351/429's have reached their respective peak and both wholesale and retail buyers have seen the writing on the wall and figure it is time to liquidate while the market is still hot. Some dealers who have cars consigned are taking a big chance as they purchased cars during this potentially "artificially inflated" (some due to anonymously bid Ebay auctions) market and are hoping to ride the last of the waves before they come crashing down on the shore of reality. I've been watching this rise and fall over the past few years and had my hand in a private 69 GT500 fastback sale which did not bode well for one "dealer" who bought it, why, simple, he paid $108,000 for the car last November, (of course promising to keep it forever as part of his collection of fine Shelbys), a concourse driven beauty of stunning proportions, one which I had been judging for well over 20 years. The sellers having owned the car for well over 20 years knew it was time to let it go as it had sat unused and unshown for the three years prior......Lot #736.1 at last years WPB auction the car failed to reach further than $97,200 (that figure includes buyers premium too boot), a price that reflected at least in my mind that that segment of the market had peaked. Of course will we see people bidding with their hearts instead of their minds, of course as that is what the whole atmosphere is all about. Barret Jackson has spent a lifetime analyzing what works and what does not, they use the cameras and the auction assistants to their advantage. The same goes for the "no reserve" auctions as they get their buyer and seller premiums no matter what the price ends up to be. Now with that said, if anyone does decide to go, my advice is to do your homework long before you ever set foot on their property. Know what the maximum you are willing to pay is on a particular item and what you could buy a similar car (always do your comps before you go) for off-line and in a private sale. Stick to those prices and make sure that you do not panic if that camera swings up and over your head putting you on the big and little screens. I say this from experience as I frustrated two particular "buyers assistants" last year both on stage and sitting in the audience while acting as a buyers broker for several automobiles. One such heated bid war on a 1971 429 CJ (#626.1) where they kept sticking the camera in my face to try and get me worked up enough to bid higher only worked until the car reached what I was willing to spend for my client. Of course we lost the auction by $500....I did end up finding a car for my client (and good friend) in nicer condition for less money a month later.....There are countless other examples over the past few years where I have either bought, or been paid to buy vehicles for myself and others.......Again let the bidder beware this year, as I believe we have seen the top of the market approaching and cars that may see new highs this year may never see those prices ever again..........

Yours In Fords,

Bill S.

I was looking at the B-J catalog (don't ask me why I get one as I have no idea).

I did find a nice car that I'd like to own: A 1970 Boss 302, 20K miles, completely original, and from the original owner! I'd take it to the track and flog the heck out of it! (lot#400)

I did like Lot#1277. It is a matching pair of Bosses: A 1969 Boss 302 and a Boss 429.

As Bill mentioned, you can find your dream Mustang or Shelby (too many to list). You can buy a (one of twelve made) 1966 Shelby GT350 convertible!

Don't worry Bruce. You will be able to find a nice collection of powerful Corvettes!

I found the perfect car for Brian, our road race champion. It is lot#1286, a 2003 Ford Fusion. It was owned by Jack Roush and raced by Mark Martin (finishing 3rd at Watkins Glen!). I see a Bush victory in your future.

I only found one car that I may could afford: A 1976 Mustang 11 with a 92hp 4 cyl. It's green with a slush box tranny (lot#3).

If you buy a car in 2007, you get your bidder fee waived in 2008 (;-) ). It now costs $500 to just get in the door ($400 before 12-1-06).

I had to read the "2007 Terms and Conditions of Sale". Summary: The seller pays 8% commission, the buyer pays 10% commission, and B-J gets rich. You can't sue anyone for false claims; it goes to "mediation" (it's sold 'as is-where is'). B-J isn't responsible for anything bad. They even have the right to display residual rights to your likeness and audio.

That agreement reminds me of some divorces I've heard about. The guy loses everything and has to pay the lawyer for the right to lose everything. BTW, Anyone remember what Johnny Carson said about marriage after his fourth divorce? "The next time I'm just going to find a woman I hate and buy her a house". ;-)

My Moms cousin was going to ship down his 1971 Mach 1 (80, yes 80 origional Miles). Its been on blocks in his barn with the interior in boxes since 1971. My Uncle said it looks like it came off the show room floor.

Speaking of Mustang II's, does anyone know of a nice Cobra II, preferably white w/blue stripes (blue w/white could be considered), 302cid for sale? Not a King Cobra which I think came out in 1978 but instead a Cobra II, preferably a 1976 model, it has to be a 302.

351 C I do believe

It would be interesting what a 71 351C Mach 1 with 80 original miles brings pricewise. I know that the regular market for these 71-3's is still very soft with only the top performers bringing "somewhat" decent money currently. I followed the 71-3 market and specifically the 71's up until I sold my three 71-429's 3+ years ago, even now, it seems that the 71-3 market is not like the 70 and earlier market.

My Boss Cougar sat on blocks in a barn for 23 years before I pulled it out. Other than some dust it was exactly as my uncle left it. It's amazing to me how preserved it was. It had 71k on it, and was all original. The tires still had about 15 lbs of air in each one.

I've been watching the market as well, and I also think it's pretty much done, or will be within the next year. In 5 years it's going to get real soft and we'll be buying muscle cars at reasonable prices again (More sellers than buyers, IMO).

My 1971 Boss 351 (18,356 original miles) has been sitting in dry indoor storage for almost 20 years and still looks like the day it was placed there. No rust, no corrosion, not even pitting in the chrome. If the Mach I mentioned above is stored on a wooden and not dirt floor, the same may be true. Of course if things have made a home in the body then all bets are off. As for the market being soft on these cars, maybe the daily drivers, but not the time capsule cars (especially one with 80 original miles) or concours restored show cars.

Time capsule cars will always have a lot of value. The cars that are going to go soft IMO are the restored drivers.
