Acala algorithmic stablecoin drops nearly 100% after suffering exploit

DOT-USD +0.40%Aug. 15, 2022 1:04 PM ET

The Acala Dollar algorithmic stablecoin has de-pegged from the U.S. dollar after hackers minted 1.28B of those tokens on the Acala Network, the decentralized finance hub of Polkadot (DOT-USD), through an exploit.
aUSD, which is designed to be pegged to the greenback, plunged 98.5% to one cent in Monday afternoon trading.
The Acala Network attributed the hack to a "misconfiguration of the iBTC/aUSD liquidity pool (which went live earlier today) that resulted in error mints of a significant amount of aUSD," according to a Twitter post on August 14.
Note that a liquidity pool in the cryptoverse refers to a crowdsourced pile of crypto locked into a smart contract. That allows liquidity to be created for traders on decentralized exchanges.
In response to the exploit, the Acala team suspended swaps as well as cross-chain transfers to keep the “erroneously minted aUSD” from exiting the parachin, a customized blockchain integrated within the polkadot (DOT-USD) blockchain.
“Once again it goes to show that the algorithmic stablecoins, in this case Acala, which is a stablecoin that’s collateralized against other currencies and not pegged to the US dollar, is vulnerable to an attack with smart contracts," said Chirs Terry, vice president of Enterprise Solutions at open lending platform SmartFi. "Once a stablecoin is depegged like this, the chances of it coming back are very slim."
On Monday, a community proposal was formed hoping to return the erroneously minted aUSD tokens to the Honzon protocol to be burned from identified accounts, according to a separate Twitter post.
The meltdown of Acala's native stablecoin comes after algorithmic stablecoin TerrUST (UST-USD) lost its U.S. dollar peg and ultimately crashed to zero in May.

Crypto just move so much faster than anything we've seen before.

The growing pains are real.

BTC down 9% for no readily apparent reason. I wonder what sort of discount people demand for big ticket items to accept BTC as payment.

FDIC orders crypto exchange FTX to address 'false and misleading' claims

Aug. 19, 2022 3:07 PM ET1 Comment

  • The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has ordered FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange owned by billionaire investor Sam Bankman-Fried, to address its "false and misleading" statements about its funds being FDIC-insured.
  • The government agency specifically pointed to FTX President Brett Harrison's Twitter post on July 20, saying "direct deposits from employers to FTX US are stored in individually FDIC-insured bank accounts in the users' names," and "stocks are held in FDIC-insured and SIPC-insured brokerage account."
  • Meanwhile, FTX US, the American division of FTX, is not insured by the FDIC, the FDIC doesn't insure any brokerage accounts and FDIC insurance doesn't cover stocks or crypto, the banking regulator wrote in a letter to FTX.

Going to pump Terminator money into Bitcoin and hope to get a GT500 out of it

Is it going to hit 10,000 before it hits 30,000?

BREAKING: Ronin Sidechain Bridge Hacked For Over $621 Million

eGamers.io - 1h ago
Today is a sad day for the Web3 community as SkyMavis‘s sidechain, Ronin, was a victim of a hack which resulted to over $621,274,336 USD (173,600 ETH and 25.5M USDC) stolen using the Ronin Bridge in two transactions (1 and 2).
This might be the biggest hack in the Web3 history. Sky Mavis in it’s announcement said the company is working with law enforcement, forensic cryptographers and investors to recover or reimburse the funds. All AXS, RON and SLP on Ronin network are currently safe.
It’s a shame that this happened as Sky Mavis is the company which managed to make Blockchain Gaming go mainstream with it’s title, Axie Infinity.
