There used to be one but now along with the c.a.r.b. certification it is required that a c.a.r.b. certified tune go with it. From what I can see no company has that? Am I missing one, is there one out there?

From what I see and I could be (hoping) missing something-- its a NO for Procharger, Vortech, Whipple and Kennebell. From what I have been able get California used to accept a C.A.R.B. certification that covered the tune that came with the SC. but now they want a certification on the SC. and a separate cert. for the tune, and now there is none of the SC that are legal in Ca. I was hoping maybe Im missing something or there is one available that has the Cert. for both the SC. and Tune.

Wait what?

CARB is California. California Air Resource Board.

What you're saying literally makes no sense. You're basically saying California just outlawed every CARB legal kit. You're either misinformed or misunderstanding what you're being told.

Vortech ditched their CARB legal 99/01 kits a few years ago and procharger followed suit soon after. Kenne bell only offered a kit as long as they could get the lower manifold from ford. Whipple never offered a kit for the 99/01 platform from what I recall.

Unless you can find someone selling a CARB legal kit used You're SOL short of a full terminator swap.

CARB is going after ANY non-approved alteration of ANY part of a car's drivetrain, that includes the tune. No way a company will spend money on an older platform to recertify.

I know what CARB is doing and has been doing.

My point is that those companies sold kits that were already certified and at no point has there been any mention of them being revoked. Vortech and Procharger simply stopped supporting the 99/01 cobra platform.

In fact both Vortech and Procharger still offer CARB legal kits for the 99-04 2V cars. If things were revoked they would also no longer be available.

That's weird. Procharger seems to offer kits for every model except the 99/01 4V. Although they have the 96-98 listed as 5.0L. It might be worth doing some research to see what the old CARB number was for the 99/01 kits and see if it's the same as the 96-98.

If I remember from other threads about new CARB rules, 2000 and newer will have ECU scanned and if you have a tune that varies enough from factory, you will get flagged.

If you get a supercharger with the CARB stamped on the data plate you should be able to just put on stock MAF and injectors for smog. Those are easy enough to swap and return stock tune.

I don’t know if this applies to <99 cars since those get tail pipe and dyno with scan.

For sure.. Most of the Imperial Valley is no smog.

I went to smog my turbo fix there and got told hell no. Part of the reason I got rid of it.

I’m sure I could’ve found a hookup, but the guy that told me know was working in a dead end alley. I specifically went there because it looked shady.

lol you have to register a car at an address in that city. Then DMV will no longer require a smog to hand over your tags when you pay registration.

Pain in the ass, but it's been done.

Yeah. You can't just show up at a shop like that. Just because it looks shady doesn't mean they're dumb. You have to know someone that knows something in a case like that.

A friend tries this recently in a county with no smog requirement. He was trying to use his other friends address.

The DMV wanted proof of residency such as a utility bill or mortgage statement.

This was just last year I believe.

Finding a "friendly" shop is getting harder and harder especially since CA started throwing techs in jail for clean piping.

It can still be done but they need to KNOW you or someone they trust has to vouch for you.

In some cases certain shops won't touch anything modified past a cold air intake even with a CARB sticker and printout from the CARB website.

I know because I've been down this road with my CARB legal KB 2.1. Even with a CARB sticker I was asked to leave multiple shops last time I smogged it. Even with it being 100% legal it can be a bitch.

He just said it won’t pass.
