So my oem fan on my 03 cobra split and popped the fuse the other day. Looking into buying a 16 inch slim fan, so i don't have to deal with this again. What i need to know is:

What is the best brand to get?
Do I need to hook up the fan resistor with an aftermarket fan?

    Thank you all in advance.

A slimline fan will compromise your cooling capacity. I believe some people switch to a mkviii fan but you may need a soft start or pwm controller to deal with the high starting current draw.

outside of the stock style fan or a mark 8 upgrade I didn't have any luck finding aftermarket fans that flow anywhere close to oem cfm

I replaced mine with a Dorman unit a couple years ago because the housing broke. No real issues so far. I mean, it hits 220° in 100+° weather when I'm stuck in traffic, but that's normal operating range for these cars. If I ever come across a deal on a Mark 8 fan I'll jump on it.

I also replaced mine 10 yrs ago.

It may have just been a bad batch of fan blades as many have had the ring break.

I have several mark viii fans for sale. I have used one for over 10 years. I just hooked up bot power wires to the fan with no issues. You will need to fab up some brackets to mount it to your radiator. They are 103.00 shipped to continental US with pp fees included.

Racebronco, you wouldn't happen to have a wiring diagram to add the Mark 8 fan to a 04 terminator?

I cut the harness off my stock fan and spliced it into the mark 8 fan. I believe most of the mark 8 fans are single speed so you just solder the high and low from the stock fan to the power side of the mark 8 and ground to ground.

DSG2003MACH1, Thanks. Did you add a freewheeling diode? does the low speed circuit turn off when the high speed circuit turns on?

I didn’t do anything else. I believe when the high speed comes on the low speed wire turns off. Wired like I described the fan will always run at it’s one speed

Thanks DSG. I have 2 Mark 8 fans at home. One i had trimmed years ago for a fox body I owned. I am going to pick a 99-04 GT fan assembly and add the Mark 8 fan and blade to the gt fan assembly. If that doenst work out, I add the uncut Mark 8 fan to the Cobra.

would i be correct to assume that if im staying in a reasonable temp range that adding the mark viii fan is of no real value? my fan comes on often but it drops the temps quickly

I believe the Mark viii fan does not have the same issue as the oem mustang fans where the fan cracks causing it to burn out the fan motor, ccrm, and or fuse.

Dont get me wrong, I'm all about controlling heat and doing anything to do that but I'm not sure this fan is something I need.
You bring up good points, I'll look into that.
Plus I guess a better fan cant hurt, would just lower the time it takes to bring the temps down

if temps are fine i dont think id change it, might not be a terrible idea to snag one and set it aside for if/when the stock one does let go
