Don't ever talk to the police, there are innumerable ways that you can and will incriminate yourself even if you are innocent. You will get details wrong, they will hear and remember details wrong. It is never in your best interest to talk to the police, it can't and never will do any good. You cannot talk yourself out of trouble, even if you did nothing wrong. Wait for an attorney.
This comes from a law professor.
