I DD a '13 Explorer sport that has about 100k miles. This has the 3.5EB. I recently got the dreaded cam-crank correlation code. Sure enough the chain was stretched and the phasers were locked up. Dealer cost to repair about $3k. I was under the impression this was a 2010-2011 issue, clearly not.

However, I was fairly satisfied that Ford corporate covered half the cost after I call customer relations, props to Ford there. Anyone else deal with this? I'm wondering if he new parts are updated or should I expect to see this again down the road.

I've also been eyeing a 2016 f-150 with a 5.0. I've read to avoid the newer 5.0 due to oil consumption issues. Thoughts?

I don't believe the oil consumption was an issue for the 2016 5.0 models. But, perhaps someone who follows the trucks more can confirm for me.

I should have clarified, by newer I meant '18+. I think the '16 is solid.

11 and 12 EBs had major issues. Yours might me a early 13. with it fixed you probably have the new style chain and phasers. 14s and 15s do not have the issues.

I have a 15 EcoBoost F150. Solid. My only complaint is shutters at idle. Going to replace plugs soon at 70,000 miles.

    I've rented an 18 5.0. Trash.
    I've rented a 19 3.5 Eco. Perfect.

The new 5.0 has a lot of timing chain noise and lag in the system(what I've been told in my review on a f150 forum). It was a worse driving experience than my old 5.4 Triton.

When you do plugs replace the COP boots while you are in there.

I tried to scope my valves and I couldn't even get to the runner before the camera gunked over.

the 11 and 12 ecoboost 3.5s are JUNK. Sell it now before the motor blows. Or get a 3rd party warranty if you can. On a cold morning start do you hear any motor noises or clacking ??

some get lucky, some get ****ed. Either way the 3.5 motor is EXPENSIVE. 14+ is what you want to buy...

even new trucks like the raptors are still having either cam phaser or tensioner issues though

the main issue on the 11s and 12s is the chain. Tons of blown motors.

That's why I decided to get a certified pre-owned with a long warranty from Ford.

I thought mine was having that issue around 92k when it started making a bunch of noise but it was just the water pump.

The transverse 3.5s have internal water pumps that are not built well. In later years(i am not sure what) but the latest revision has a dual sprocket on the water pump and is supposed to be better built units too. The problem is when the water pump fails, it puts the coolant into the oil. You dont know this has happened until you get a oil pressure light or whatever light and by that time your engine is probably toast.

The f150 3.5 has external water pumps and no known failure of the pump either.

Because I asked them nicely. I had to go through corporate not the dealership. I made my case that I've owned a bunch of Ford's and this isn't a standard repair but a known flawed design.
