I think the bare casting are the same. Valve train is different. Ford GT had bigger cams and valve train to go with the cams. Its very expensive to make an all new casting. So I'm sure Ford didn't spend anymore money on an all new head. They just made a few changes to fit the Mustang.

I take photos, you can see the different, I hope.
The casting number is engraved on my GT heads by hand.

The heads are the SAME, the intake valves are the same between the Gt and GT500. The exhaust Valves are Different as the Gt has INconel Exhaust valves. The valve springs are the same on both sides. The cam gears do not sit higher in the Gt heads, but they are bigger due to the Gt500 needing clearance to go inbetween the frame rails. So ford made smaller cam gears for the gt500 and smaller valve covers. The lifters are the same and the rockers are the same also.

So to use GT heads on the Gt500 just need to swap the cam gear?

    Who me?

If so, I'm looking at building a motor, For the price Tousley has GT heads with cams I'm thinking of just buying a set of new heads to basically have a long block ready to go. It's good to know what is interchangable or not.

Awesome, thanks for the info Dan. I knew someone had to know. I just hadn't wanted to bother calling and asking you or a few others I know so I thought I'd try my luck on the forums.

I think he meant what is the point of swapping from the GT500 to the GT heads. And now I'm curious as well. Because I know of a builder that was building a 1000hp 5.4 4v build and they built and completely ported GT500 heads, and then after they switched to GT heads and the valve train and used the GT500 heads on something else. I'm just curious if there is no cast or design difference, and only the valves and cam gears and cam covers and what not, then why the swap on so many engines? Hmm if this is the case I think I will just stick with the GT500 heads then.

Also the big timing gears and Gt valve covers will work in a Gt500, just the motor is a little tight going in. I have done it so i know!

That's what I have been doing. Ford GT block with Darton sleeves and Ford GT heads which I got a great deal on the pair complete with valves springs and cams. I spoke with Dan S. on Friday about the GT heads and just saw this thread today, I have them sitting on the block and everything looks fine. I will use the GT500 timing gears and chains along with GT500 valve covers.

I also have fit the VTS intercooler in the GT500 manifold. I had to grind some on the bottom of the intake manifold cover and smooth the weld on one corner of the intercooler, or else there is no way to fit the lower manifold cover on. This may have just been because I got one of the first batch sent out?

I will continue to run my stock engine with the 2.9 until I finish this one.....hopefully it lasts. With 24#s boost plus who knows when I will have that sick feeling!

Can you tell us what your combo is? Have you been experimenting with custom cams for these applications? I want custom cams to utilize all the potential of the worked over heads and the massive air pump underneath them. Also have you been porting your heads? Have any pics? I would like to find someone I feel is competent enough to port my heads, I won't settle for the average run of the mill port job. Sounds like you guys have quite a record, which is awesome.

    Thanks for any info. FFS

We will be trying our new CNC Machined Heads and Cams combination!

These are not off the shelf cams, or even existing part #'s being tweaked a little!

These Heads and Cams were developed for use with our Ported Intake Manifold with Factory Intercooler, and the Kenne Bell 2.8H and 3.6LC!

A lot of this is experimental so we won't really know until we put it on the engine dyno! I do feel very confident since the people that are involved with us are the very best at what they do!

That is awesome, and I'm glad that it doesn't sound like a sales pitch since you are admitting that this stuff is experimental, because it always is with new combos. I am looking forward to hearing your results soon, so please keep me in the loop.

Also since it sounds like this is a entirely new combo, will you be providing any back to back or any other type of comparison tests/results.

I will probably be calling you when it is time to order parts for mine so we can discuss what I need. Thanks for the info, FFS

We offer alot of combos from all out race motors supporting up to 2500HP or the more common street engine, here are some pics of work we have done.

We have the quickest and Fastest 2005-2010 Mustang (powered by a GT500 twin turbo MMR engine)in the country and have built more 7 second modular engines than anyone in the country. We were also the first company to produce 2000+ HP modular on the engine dyno 2 years ago (2109HP to be exact at 41psi) Please let us know how we can help or if you have any questions!

Here are some pics of our higher end work, they are all 5.4/DOHC/Ford GT, GT 500 heads:

Can you fit GT500 valve covers to GT heads (and gears) by relieving the internal of the valve covers?

It is my understanding that you cannot. This is what originally spiked my curiosity, because I was at an engine builders shop helping him dress a 5.4 4v he put together and the GT500 covers would not sit down on the GT heads and valve train. We did not try to clearance the cover at all, we just accepted they would not fit and ordered GT covers at that point. Again we did not look at the covers or try though, so maybe it is possible? Thanks Stan,

How far from seating were the GT500 covers? .100", .500" ?? On BBF 460's we have been spacing the valve covers to clear the shaft mounted rockers.

    Any others with experience here?

There would be no need to space the valve covers, either use gt valve covers with the gt or Navi timing gears or use the gt500 valve covers with the small gt500 timing gears.

Accufab/John Mahovetz has made more than 2000 hp on Westech's dyno more than 2 years ago and this is with a 4.6. Not to bust your bubble, just stating facts. Also how many 7 secs mod motor cars are out there? Less than 10 i bet as not many have gone 7s with a mod motor and i know three or 4 off the top of my head that do not have your motors and they are all radial cars.
