So, a rant here. Needed to vent a little I suppose.

Dad has been a life long Democrat, which is not surprising as he was on the back-end of he hippie era. In my youth, I was much more left leaning than I am today. Time and real life experiences in the trades EARNING a paycheck force you to realize some truths in a rather humble way. Im a conservative who believes in personal liberty.

He has been vocally in opposition to DJT and makes no bones about it. He definitely is a mainstream media consumer. CNN, MSNBC, Bill Maher, The daily show with Trever Noah etc. I have completely tuned out the MSM, even Fox news though if I must watch I do watch them over all the others. I look for sources that provide factual information with limited commentary. When I do want to hear political commentary, guys like Steven Crowder and Styxhexenhammer666 on youtube fulfill that role with a little Ben Shapiro sprinkled in there for flavor.

Ive been fairly tolerant of my Dads left leaning rants about trump, the economy (of which his is fully invested in stocks ironically enough) and anything else political. He constantly shares articles from HuffPost, Vice, Vox, New York Times, Washington Post, WSJ, CNN, MSNBC etc to my email. You can imagine the ridiculous content they contain. They immediately go in the trash folder.

He has occasionally switched tactics to group message myself and my GF on FB Messenger. He for some reason thinks that my GF is more liberal because she's a wahman. She's very much like me politically which is REALLY nice. We have both politely asked him to not do that. For the most part he has complied.

well... today was the day. The blackest of days. The day i found out my Dad dove off the deep end. Today, my Dad sent me an FB messenger message about Alexandria Occasio-Cortez. He stated that a clip of her describing how money and power have corrupted our government and way of life should be watched. Sarcastically saying to keep waving "That flag of freedom" if we dont think her words are true.

    ....

That was the last straw. The last, defiling act of my father crossing over to the darkside in my political mind. Sure, I knew he was a Democrat, but I had always believed him to be more center left than batshit left. Today there is no doubt... my father holding Ocassionaly-Kotex up to me as an example of common sense in mainstream politics was too much to handle. Too much to remain silent.

I told him so. I made my case for why she is a complete ****ing moron and that her new Green Deal was literally thinly veiled communism. Dad rants about there being an oligarchy that invisibly controls this country and the world and how its evil. I retort 2 things: 1 its not a crime to strive to make money. I could give a **** about billionaires making billions. pay their FAIR share in taxes and Im happy. 2: I see more liberal and left wing billionaires throwing their cash around the country fighting to STRIP me and my rights of freedom and liberty under the guise of common sense and "safety". Promoting the murder of babies as a fight for wahmens rights, and the erradication of the second amendment....

A conservative billionaire puts his money behind politics that make him more money? Imagine that. Who the **** would have thought! I dont hear of any conservative mega rich "oligarch" demanding the repeal of the second amendment now do I? I cant think of any mega rich conservative dude or lady that is swinging a ton of political cash to ACTIVELY change or strip me of my constitutional rights. Its a daily thing on the left all wrapped in a "its just common sense control laws!!!" package. **** off.

As the tax thread here recently stated, there has been more money repatriated under Donald Trump's Presidency than any other in modern times. That's generated TAX revenue for THE ENTIRE country. This nation is fighting to keep itself sane, and grounded and not ****ing communist.

I suppose at the end of the day, Im disappointed that my dad is falling for all this. And he's becoming vocal, spewing all the politically left bullshit you'd expect...

After making my peace respectfully, I asked him to stop any future political correspondence. Messenger, email, phone call etc. Im just done. So far I havent checked messenger but it doesnt matter. Im over hearing about it.

Donald J. Trump for President 2020. MAGA.

I know your pain, have some members in my family that are raging liberals. Funny how that can really effect your relationship with family and how you view them, define them. I honestly have written some of them off, not all, but a few. They are dead to me.

I rarely speak to my sister for this very reason. She's a raging liberal who took my nephew, and turned him into my niece, and hates the 2A, among other things. Granted, we stopped being close after she left for college, and started her own life 1K miles away. But still, I can count on one hand the number of conversations we've had over the last 5 - 10 years, excluding the holiday season. It's awkward to even talk to her, now, because we have nothing in common, and know nothing about what's going on in each other's lives.

He gets his information from biased sources, what’s to expect.

Ask him how his stocks are doing since DJT was elected. Have him compare today to prior to election.

    Or to compare unemployment.

The list goes on and on. You cannot argue AGAINST facts with logic, so he has no legitimate argument, he’s just repeating the drivel he’s told.

Should tell him to take the blinders off, it’s really pretty out here in the outside world.

Let me just say, your dad is not alone in his far left thinking. "That" radical movement is sadly gaining steam. I am not looking forward to 2020.

sounds like one of my cousins and his stupid fembeast wife...their kids all have a hyphenated last name if that tells you anything. They posted pictures of their youngest son in purple girls rain boots and a dress, they seemed so smug about it. That was pretty much it for me, decided I'm cutting that branch off the family tree, will pour a 40 out for yah homie.

My aunt and cousin (21) in Philly are far left, Women's Marching liberals. My uncle (dad's brother) just stays quiet and my other cousin (18) is very normal. It's definitely unfortunate, as my cousin is super bright, and got a full-ride scholarship to UPenn with the intent of being a neurosurgeon. Something changed while there, and I'm sure she's on the path to fatness, tattoos, and blue hair (I mean modern feminist). I have a great relationship with them all, but if anything politics is mentioned they turn into screeching banshees.

I use the same lines to shut them up:
    1. Do you think my uncle (her husband!), my dad, my grandpop, or me got where we are in life only because we are white males? I tend to think it's because they all worked their asses off.
    2. Do you think the wage gap between her and my uncle has to do with job choices? I.E, one is an elementary school teacher (a job that requires skill but is notoriously low paying), and one restores antique furniture and works of art (a profession that requires a high level of skill, is in-demand in a historic, artsy city like Philly, and few are trained to do).
    3. Explain to me why my wife, a woman, a "people of color" (parents are Colombian) makes nearly double my salary (6 figures and starts with a 2), has a higher title than me at the same company, is younger than me, and works for a woman Director and woman Division President. Explain how that fits with the white male privilege narrative?

Unsurprisingly, they never have an answer and change the subject to something about Orange Man bad. As per usual with lefties, just use common sense and facts on them and they stop talking.

As they are pretty devout Catholics, I'm excited to hear their stance on their party's new-found obsession with infanticide.

I am a strict constitutionalist in my political thinking and leanings, where what the constitution says is law. But I did have a few things that I agree with the Dems on (consumer protections) , that was until the last 20 years where they done a hard left right into the Socialism, Communism is great just got to give it one more chance to succeed. Now every time I come around Libs or hard lefties I just tell them lets go to France, Venezuela, or Cuba and get to experience that wonderful socialism first hand. Usually they just mumble something along the lines it failed because of someone in the government dropping the ball, instead of the actual failings of a failed system.

It's hard to make nice with people who consistently vote to squander the liberty and prosperity my children will inherit.

I feel like people from both parties use this rhetoric on each other.

Seems as if we're all in the same boat around here.... most of my family doesn't talk about politics. So I couldn't honestly say which way they tend to think but most remarks/comments have been right leaning.
My girlfriend's family is kinda split. Her and her dad are Republicans, her sister and mom are Democrats. But they don't usually talk much about politics either.

However my sister in law is a diehard liberal, which I enjoy because its fun to piss her off and watch her get all upset lol. But that's the same gal my dad and I call Spark Plug as she once said her Grand Am had only 1 spark plug.... so there's that. And then I do have a cousin or two, along with some family friends that do nothing but rant about Trump and how Obama was better.

I try not to talk politics with family, to many D's, but if they insist, I obliterate them with facts.

I lean a good bit right but I have some in my family who lean waaaaay right, super hard core baptists, etc they are similar to the crazy far left in that they refuse to hear facts.

Have a handful of super lefties too...We don't mention any politics anymore

Luckily I don't have any libs in my immediate family. If I did, I'd have to never talk politics. Or listen to their views. It would only cause long term problems.
Especially if the left gained power & everything turned to shit.

I have yet to have politics affect person relationships. I deal with people face to face. No Fakbook. I'm just to hard of a read. My in-laws are Libs and they know my leaning because of the wife. My F inlaw a Harvard law man taunts me at every family gathering. I really enjoy the he back and forth. OP I'm glad you vented, don't hold a grudge at the old man though.

@lOOKnGO Totally agree. Ive got no hard feelings toward the man. I just wonder if its a combination of being functionally retired and being exposed to the type of media outlets he follows. Living in California doesnt help haha.

For many of his career years he was a business development manager of Reclamation for various Reclamation firms.

Co-developed a treatment process to remove in-situ chemical contaminates from soil using thermal remediation. Specifically, superfund sites that required cleanup of commercial property to clean EPA standards.

Also, for 7 years was CEO of a reclamation firm that was developing microbes and bacteria that were engineered to feed on contaminate liquids and oils (industrial solvents, machine lubricants etc). The technology worked, microbes did what they were engineered to do. The board of directors was terrible at the stock market side of the business unfortunately.

The last 8 years or so he was co-developing a treatment method to expel water from mature fine tailings (clay soup) from the oil sand operation in Canada. Found a treatment and procedure that worked. Got a couple of patent coauthorings under his belt for it too. Essentially the work was torpedoed after successful large tank demonstrations when the price of oil fell.

The man is a smart guy... just stuck on this line of political thinking is concerning.
