For those with a stripped fuel hat bolt. What is the best fix?

Okay guys apparently the shop and put my car back together stripped one of the bolts on my fuel hat. I didn't find this out until I filled the tank last night.

I dropped the tank and found it’s leaking around the hat. Grabbed the 1/4 ratchet and low and behold one is 100% stripped.

So what’s the fix? New tank? Rethread? Some kind of thicker gasket? Duck tape?

I honestly can’t remember what the setup is from when I did mine.

Is there a nut welded onto the bottom side of the flange/inside the tank?

I want to yes. It’s been years since I opened one up. I couldn't open this one up yet bc of the 10 gallons of gas in it. I’m going to assume it only leaks when it’s completely full.

Ok so gotta be a captive nut under there.

Unless it’s a ring like mentioned above, you pretty much have one avenue.

Drill/tap it out a size up. Drill hat accordingly if needed.

Sounds like a royal PITA. I may try a stainless course thread metal screw and see it it seals. I want to say the threads on the inner ring are the punch through kind. Not a lot of meat to rethread.

Gonna be annoyed if I have to pull a fuel tank from a junkyard for one thread..

You don’t need a ton of clamping force there.

You should be able to punch it to the next size up. May take some finesse where you tap it without drilling.

Go on Amazon, get a Nutsert kit. Make sure it has M5 and M6. I am 99.9% sure they are M5 screws.

Measure the threaded insert, drill correct size hole. Take a slightly larger bit and countersink the hole for the flange of the nutsert to rest in. Install the insert and you are done.

Cool kit but I dont Think it will work in this situation the threads aren’t in the actual tank. The ring is riveted to the tank

Get a helicoil kit from one of the parts stores. You probably won't even have to drill anything. Just run the tap for the helicoil down.

If there isn't enough material for a helicoil, you could use metal epoxy to hold a piece of threaded rod in place. The threaded rod and the shape of the hole would make for a good strong fastener.

And if you did want to weld the gas tank, which would probably warp the ring, filling the tank full with water would make it safe to weld.
