For my plans, 4.10s are going to be a better drag race gear, as they will provide more torque multiplication, and put me above peak rpm going through the traps. However, because this car isn't going to be as hardcore as my 99, I haven't decided if I want to go that many highway rpm. It's not a big difference, but every little bit counts.

Thanks for the info bob

As mentioned before, guys with the 4.10s love them and guys who have no first hand knowledge say they are too much gear. I'll listen to the guys who have actually done the mod. With my stock pullied car and 3.55s, it seems to take forever for the RPMs to climb and the car to get moving. That means to me that a bigger gear is necessary. I think the 4.10s will be a big help in that area. Also, I have to shift to 4th a short way before the traps in the 1/4 mile with 3.55s. The 4.10s should get the car into the 4th gear power band. Supposedly the lower gear will also improve launches by not making them such a bog or spin situation. Walking the car out with 4.10s is supposed to be easier than with 3.55s. IMHO, pullied cars may not be able to use so much gear but stock pullied cars can benefit from the gear change.

The gear is going in today so I will know first hand some time this afternoon.

no doubt more gear is GREAT! i for one would say that its a bit for the street most of the time. after 5k rpms in 2nd i have NO traction with 335 michelins...but maybe i just need drag radials?

so what happens when someone wants to go from a 40-50 roll? you drop a ca rlength form spinning. yes i know u can foot it but its kinda dum to do that at the top of a gear....are u using DR's?

Update:

I've had the 4.10 gears for a couple days and love them. 2nd-4th gears ROCK! 1st spins under anything approaching full throttle. 4.10s are a great street gear as long as you have a stock pulley. I wouldn't want to put a smaller pulley on with these gears unless I had some sticky drag radials. The car feels lighter due to the torque multiplication. Starting out in first or reverse is even easier than with the 3.55s. No bog when the clutch is engaged. My passengers tell me the car is MUCH quicker. I think so, too. :)

so then i guess you have to ask yourself this question, whats more worth it... having a aftermarket pulley with 3.73's-4.10's or having the stock pulley with 4.10's?

Will gear void the warranty like a pulley swap and tune? If not maybe I will go that route. If I went to 3.73's how huch gain would I see with cat-back and cai?

You do not gain any power from a gear change. Your engine output is still the same.
Think of it as the gears on your mountain bike. Even if you change gears, your leg power stays the same.

I know that, I meant gain as in time to 60, 100, 1/4 mile ect....

What about warranty claims on the engine?

They should NOT hassle you for gears. If it is in direct relation to the damage then yes, they will hassle you. From my experience, they don’t even notice.

What about 4.30's?
rpms in 6th @75 (highway) go from 2197 (3.55) to 2661 (4.30).
120 mph (speed I'm at when I cross 1/4 finish) in 4th (3.55) is 5580, 5th (4.30) is 5407. I'd have to shift 1 more time, but 5th is 1:1, so it might not be bad.

Anyone have 4.30's?

actually 4th is 1:1 ...4.30 would be a waste in this car i tthink even on stock pulley. i cant imagine any more gear than i have (3.90's)

Your set-up will play a role in your decision as well. Different power-adders, auto swaps, solid axle swaps.....all these things play a role. Just thought I would throw that out there so you can keep that in mind for your future mods.

Wow, I wasn't aware that 4th is 1:1.

So...with 4th gear being 1:1, the optimal gear (assuming traction wasn't an issue) would put you probably a couple hundred rpm's below redline/shift point. So...in my stock limiter car, ideally I'd be crossing the finish line at 6200-6400 rpms. My trap speed ranges from 112-115 mph, depending on the air and race weight. So...i cross the finish line at anywhwere from 116-120 mph.

At 116 mph with 4.10's, I'd be at 6230.
At 120 mph with 4.10's, I'd be at 6445.

That seems ideal, but if I mod anymore, I'll have to shift into 5th.

So....once I'm pullied, etc....

At 120 mph with 3.90's, I'd be at 6130.
At 125 mph with 3.90's, I'd be at 6386.
At 127 mph with 3.90's, I'd be at 6500.

Seems like 3.90's are the best for most pullied 03/04 Cobras when it comes to 1/4 mile times.

Did I miss anything?

Hummm well i'm getting a solid rear from my buddy who has 4.10 already installed in it. I may change them to the 3.90s but i don't see myself going to the track more then 10 times this summer. I'm getting a beater car too so i would be able to slap some slicks on it then because i wouldn't be driving it every day. Do you all think i should stay with the 4.10s then?
