Gt350 Looks questionable in the hp department or am I off?

It seems the GT350 has to bear the cross of the GT500 that-isn't-yet.

... apparently it's hard to fathom that Ford might be splitting the two for road course focus and the other for straight line and cruising times.

We all actually win; but you'd never know it with all the bizarre argument about what-should-be-despite-economics-and-the-laws-of-physics.

Gt350 is weak because race Honda

My buddy built a k20 Honda with a turbo from a diesel so the displacement grew to 6.7 like a cummins so it's really torquey and runs 9's bro so gt350 is weak. He has suspension too and aerodynamic stuff like a spoiler. He puts good tires on it (general a50's) in the summer for autox and pulled 95mph in a slalom around lamps in the parking lot. He's only into it $9k and it's too fast for every Ferrari in the state.

A quick comment on the price issue in general.....

At first I was sorta, I dunno, pissed about a $50k Mustang and was like "The GT itself is already WAY overpriced". Then I got to thinking.... is it really?

So I did a little math, and based on the 88 GT (the first post-70's car worth owning in my yoot) which I always thought was a KILLER bargain the current car is actually priced very similar. I simply looked at MSRP and minimum wage for both model years - and the current GT would only require an additional week's work -vs- what the 88 required. So I guess that my opinion there was a little poorly founded. However - dealers marking GTs up to $45k because they added a pinstripe and XM radio is another story....

Looking at the the GT350 it's decidedly a pretty good value. I know a lot of you didn't need convincing so maybe this is just for me, but whatevs, that's OK too....

EDIT:
w00t! 11 years on the board and I finally break 500 posts!

^ A loaded s550 5.0 in the mid 40's is over priced. What you get for a GT350 is not. This is the new lb for lb performance king for its value. We aren't talking about adm or used either. You won't find any other car right now for under 50k, 529hp, 6 piston front, 4 piston rear brakes and lower than normal production numbers.

People saying this car doesn't have enough hp need to post up their experience and what they run on a road course to validate their opinion. Who cares if they believe 99% of the owners will straight line race only, if I owned this car I would probably do both. Over 500hp in an NA mustang ready to take on competition at the International level, if this car isn't enough, maybe you should wait for the GT500 or look else where. Ford will not give two shits either way.

I think we've beaten the "you don't get it, it's a track car" horse plenty in several threads here....

Personally I'm OK with the power, I just wish the chassis had slimmed a little more. I was really hoping (as I'm sure many were) that the S550 would lose 300#.

Yeah - why the incredulity? I don't care to argue the point enough to look for it - but Ford made a statement to the effect that the car was likely to lose up to 300 pounds. And instead it gained.

Where was the statement made? Who made it?

That being said. If the car didn't have an IRS it would be damn close. I'll take the IRS and a few lbs.

Pericak personally said on Autoline After Hours that he thought they could drop about 200lbs. The thing is, the chassis did drop that much. Adding all the new safety and luxury equipment is what caused the car to gain it all back, and then some. Let's not kid ourselves, the C7 weighs 3300lbs., so there's no way we're going to see a Mustang that light anytime soon. Cars are just heavy these days.

For sure. Iirc a c7 is actually about 3375-3500lbs in an guise and 3500-3600 in z06 guise. It's obviously option dependent but ya cars aren't really getting any lighter.

I will say manufacturers are getting unbelievably good at hiding and effectively shrinking the "feel" of the heft... But I mean that only goes so far so ya...

Key word is thought right here.

Exactly. A 3300 lb mustang would be $80k (carbon and aluminum)

The problem is or was that Ford made the mustang bigger in 2005 and the interior dimensions stayed the same. Bigger car bigger chasis and the car will gain weight. I would love to see the s550 chasis the size of the 03/04 svt mustangs. Even with the added regulations you could have the same size cabin as you do now, smaller car with the weight being 3400-3500lbs.

Now imagine the GT350R at 3300lbs!:dancenana::pepper::rockon:

Spreadsheet benchracing at its finest. Since when does a Bentley Mulsanne or BMW 7 series compete with a Mustang? Or most of the cars on your list?

The S550 wont weigh less than a Viper or Corvette.

Me too. I recall reading that the S550 might lose up to 10% curb weight but it got heavier.
V8 Gen 6 Camaro lost ~200#. A 3400-3500# curb weight Mustang would have been nice, albeit the new and heavier car is likely better in nearly every way than the S197.

I agree. I really don't know why, since Ford was able to build a bespoke Mustang chassis for 2015, that the car didn't become physically smaller than the S197. My only guess would be so that they had more flexibility to use the chassis on other Fords, but I am truly confused by that.

Thank you for helping me illustrate my point.

The OP was concerned that the HP wasn't enough for a $50k car. I clearly showed that every other 500+ car is a lot more expensive.
