Real scientists don't use computers and electronic calculators. They do every calculation in long form on paper. And they use pen, not pencil, because they never make mistakes.

Only people who don't know how to Math use computers.

    Retired in 2009.

EDIT: Eh... rephrase. I quit because I got tired of playing a rich mans game while I'm poor. Didn't really do it long enough or make enough money to say I "retired".

Lewis Hamilton gets PAID millions of dollars per year to drive an automatic. Formula 1 (and LeMans) teams want their drivers to be focused solely on turning the steering wheel and hitting the brake points and apexes. An automatic transmission allows them to do that by taking most of the thought and skill out of shifting. Send Lewis around a track in an automatic F1 car then in one equipped with a real manual, and I bet you wouldn't be able to slide a piece of paper between the cars by looking at the times.

Plenty of "fast" automatic cars get their asses handed to them by cars with manual transmissions. The man driving the stick just needs to know how to shift. If you're so hung up on the monkey-boy transmission being the best, then have at it. However, if you're not putting food on the table from racing, and you're driving a performance car with an automatic transmission, you're not really an enthusiast. You're just a cruiser.

FYI F1 transmissions are not automatic, they're semi-automatic. They still have a clutch which is used to get the car moving, which means there is still skill involved in launching. It's also not an automatic because it won't shift gears on it's own.

Also, up until recently Ferrari used a clutchless manual transmission, not an automatic.

Regardless how much more efficient an automatic can be, it's still boring and lame as hell.

If the new GT500 has an auto, I'll buy it. If it has a stick shift I'll pass. And it's not because I don't enjoy a good shifting manual transmission, it's that FORD cannot make a good shifting from the factory manual transmission. They're absolute junk. My 04 cobra required a shifter and an input shaft. My 12 is still a bag of shit even with the MGW 2. I've ordered the Blow Fish Racing shifter support, so I'll move where the shifter is mounted from the vehicle body to the actual transmission. So no, I'll never buy another manual trans Ford. If that makes me less than an enthusiast oh well, enjoy the view of my taillights. And I've had 20+ manual trans mustangs in my life.

Unless it's got paddle shifters. That makes it fun. Downshift and upshift without a clutch?!?! Awesome.

see the problem with the auto's, and what makes them undesirable in a performance street or road car imo, is the inability to disengage the flywheel from the transmission.

this eliminates the control the driver has over engine rpm as it relates to the rest of the drivetrain, and that is a very important thing to have in order to make the car behave exactly how he wants.

Can't you just put it in neutral? I mean... that's what I do when I need to. Not sure, but maybe I am missing something.

Too many children these days that care nothing about driver involvement and driver cars. Sad honestly.

Retarded logic from the traditional manual enthusiasts. Unless you dig race for a sport or a road course rat, I can't even see you defending the manual transmission! Yes, this post is for the roll racers who think pushing in a clutch at cruising speed makes them think they are the next Randy Pobst. You guys need a serious reality check if your making auto guys look bad.

Pushing in a clutch and getting into the next gate doesn't take any more effort than clicking a paddle on a steering wheel. Most likely the engineering is in the beefed up trans, clutch, and shifter and your the catalyst in between it all. I would be more worried about not locking up my transmission or blowing up my clutch at highway speeds.

Now from a pure fun factor perspective, the manual transmission will always win because it involves more body effort, synchronization and concentration. Especially if your trying to exploit every ounce of power in whatever your doing such as circuit racing or dig racing. But we live in age where its really about the cars and how powerful they are. So arguing about a transmission choice is really moot point. I can say this though, the faster you go the more the manual transmission will be a liability. Human error magnifies when mistakes are made so I rather be on end of auto in terms of speed.

Source: I own both and they are fun in different ways.

That's all you needed to say because it negated everything else you wrote and supports why a manual transmission is for those who actually like to drive and be involved in the experience.

I'm really sick of this BS argument. Its all opinion. Yet, you get the "manual is more fun" or "Real drivers can row gears" or "your not an enthusiast / real car guy in an auto". And you certainly can't say one is more fun than the other. "Fun" is an opinion. What's fun to me might not be fun for someone else.

New flash... Opinions can't be wrong, and comparing apples, the auto will always be faster.

You like driving a stick? Great... have fun. Like driving an auto? That's cool too. Whether you row gears or not has nothing to do with being a man, racer, enthusiast or anything else other than the car you enjoy driving.
