Global Chip Shortage Means Thinner New-Car Supply, Higher Prices
BY SEBASTIAN BLANCO, CAR & DRIVER
MAR 27, 2021

If you're shopping for a new car or truck right now, you'll find that the worldwide shortage of semiconductors is interfering with both supply and choices.

rouge08-1616872842.jpg?crop=1.21xw:1.jpg

  • Between the pandemic, winter weather in Texas ,and shipping problems around the world, automakers are able to manufacture fewer autos these days.
  • Auto plants around the world—with Ford, GM, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, and VW among the companies affected—are stopping production because there's a global shortage of semiconductor chips.
  • Some in-demand models are reportedly being hit with dealer markups as high as $10,000, and some Ford dealers have resorted to selling their demo models of the Ford Bronco Sport.
The thin line between just-in-time auto manufacturing and an idled production plant has become crystal clear again with the spreading effects of a global semiconductor chip shortage and other logistical problems.

That there's a chip shortage isn't news. We reported last month that the shortage would likely mean that a million fewer cars will be built around the world, costing the industry $61 billion in this quarter alone. The problem stems from a change in who the semiconductor manufacturers are making chips for right now.

At the start of the pandemic a year ago, automakers reduced their orders, thinking that they wouldn't be able to build as many new cars as they originally thought. When the market rebounded, automakers discovered that chip suppliers were busy fulfilling orders for computers and gaming consoles, given that the companies building consumer electronics didn't see a pandemic-related decline. Just the opposite, in fact.

Now, the chip shortage has caught up with vehicle supply at the dealership level and the trend isn't likely to change any time soon. Bloomberg collected a list of automakers that have announced some sort of production delay due to the chip shortage as well as the dramatic cold weather that hit Texas and other parts of the U.S. recently, affecting the production of some plastic and foam vehicle components. The list includes Toyota (which is pausing production in the Czech Republic), Honda (some plants in the U.S. and Canada), Nissan (U.S. and Mexico), VW (Portugal) and Mitsubishi (U.S.). General Motors and Ford have also halted some production. On top of all of this, there's also congestion at ports on the West coast of the U.S., and we don't yet know how the container ship that's currently stuck in the Suez Canal and adding to the global shipping backup might affect the industry.

Ford, for example, said that it will build some F-150 trucks and Edge SUVs in North America that are missing some parts, like electronic modules that require semiconductor chips, with a plan to install the missing components later. The automaker is already facing a shortage of some models, notably the new Bronco Sport, but that might not necessarily be due to the chip shortage. Still, some Ford dealers have started selling off their demo units of the Bronco Sport, which is usually not allowed, but Ford Authority, citing a letter sent to dealers, reported that the automaker is okay with dealers taking these steps, advising them that the two Bronco Sport demo models that were sent to dealers as part of the company's Mannequin Program no longer have to stay at the dealership for four months or 4000 miles before they can be sold. Some dealers, the website reports, have been adding $10,000 to the MSRP for the Bronco Sport, too, since they have so many more people who want one than they have units to sell.

The Wall Street Journal spoke with dealers about the vehicle crunch that started with the production halts from a year ago as the pandemic hit. The paper found that local supply is decidedly wanting compared to the number of vehicles the dealers usually have on hand. The industry had hoped to get back to relatively normal in 2021, but that isn't what's happening. Data from Wards Intelligence shows that the number of vehicles at or in transit to dealerships was down 26 percent in February 2021 compared to the same month in 2020. For pickup trucks, the number was closer to 50 percent. That all leads to a few unfortunate realities for anyone looking to buy a new car soon: you're likely looking at fewer choices on the lot, higher prices, or a longer wait time for your car to arrive.

Copper demand from auto industry expected to double as EVs ramp up
  • Copper demand is expected to increase as more electric vehicle manufacturers ramp up production.
  • Morgan Stanley breaks down the impact of EVs on copper supply.
  • "Our commodity team assumes an average of 20kg of copper in the average ICE light vehicle and 75kg per copper in the average BEV. Applied to our de-adoption of ICE and our adoption of BEVs in our global auto forecast suggests a growth in copper demand for light vehicles (excluding infrastructure) to approximately 3.4 million tons by 2030 vs. around 1.6 million tons today for a CAGR just shy of 8%."
  • MS notes that the global copper market is a 22M ton market for refined copper with the total market being around 28M tons which includes 6M tons of scrap in between. MS sees a risk in the middle of the decade of a copper shortage and notes a copper substitute could be more than ten years out.
  • Copper prices (HG1:COM) are already near their 10-year highs.

Tesla and Toyota reportedly considering a SUV partnership
  • Reports generated out of China indicate that Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Toyota (NYSE:TM) are considering working together on developing a small SUV platform. Chosun Media says talks have been going on since last year.
  • The suggested collaboration would see Toyota provide the vehicle platform to Tesla, while Tesla would supply some of the electronic control platform and software technology to the vehicle platform.
  • The same reporting of a Toyota-Tesla tie-up was also posted in a Korean media publications today.
  • Toyota was an early investor in Tesla before selling its stake.
  • During last year's Tesla Battery Day, Elon Musk teased a sub-$25K electric vehicle. Does a Toyota partnership make that a reality?

The Voltswagen era to being in U.S. in May
  • Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAF) confirms yesterday's report that it is changing the name of its U.S. operations to Voltswagen. The name change becomes effective in May.
  • "We have said, from the beginning of our shift to an electric future, that we will build EVs for the millions, not just millionaires. This name change signifies a nod to our past as the peoples’ car and our firm belief that our future is in being the peoples’ electric car," updates the German automaker.

Maersk puts many short-term bookings on hold to deal with Suez backup
  • Maersk (OTCPK:AMKBY) is suspending bookings of short-term contracts on many of its routes in order to deal with the logjam in the Suez, Bloomberg reports.
  • The shipper is the biggest container ship customer at the Suez Canal, with about 1,150 transits last year.
  • But in the wake of the canal's blockage by Evergreen's Ever Given (now freed), it says it expects a "significant loss in capacity over multiple weeks."
  • As a result, this week and in the immediate future it's suspending short-term bookings placed via its Spot system along with short-term contracts for certain routes including exports from Asia.
  • The shipper had warned this week that "Even when the canal gets reopened, the ripple effects on global capacity and equipment are significant."

Volkswagen called likely EV partner for Apple by Wedbush
  • Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAF) is down about 2.25% in Frankfurt trading to cut into what has been a rally of more than 60% over the last month amid the electrification push from the German auto giant.
  • Wedbush's Dan Ives looks beyond the folly with the early April Fools Day joke by Volkswagen to see a serious EV commitment.
  • "VW is doubling down on its EV initiatives for the next decade as the European auto stalwart unveiled its plans to build six "gigafactories" in Europe by 2030 with a total production capacity of 240 gigawatt hours per year. These are impressive and ambitious EV goals which will also include a significant number of EV charging points to networks across Europe (18k by 2025), the US, and China. VW is accelerating its EV endeavors as the company announced more than 70% of its European sales will be EVs by 2030, up from its previous target of 35%. The company also expects half its sales to be from EVs by 2030 in the US and China. The company is stepping up its EV R&D (which speaks to its name change in the US) as it plans to spend $19 billion around accelerating these trends by 2025."
  • Ives and team continue to believe that VW is the most likely EV partner for Apple as Cupertino goes through the EV dating game and likely picks its strategic EV partner by the summer timeframe for the Apple Car.
  • Read about the Voltswagen prank.

Is the long term long haul driver shortage driving the automation push or is it that autonomous trucks never have to crew rest?

I can imagine so many ways 80,000 pounds of autonomous truck can go wrong. Not to mention thieves are gonna have a field day. Cops aren't gonna give a shit your load is being stripped out in the boonies. Car pulls up in front and slows to a stop, a truck pulls up behind and let the stripping commence. To add insult to injury, they strip the copper high voltage lines from the truck.

One Stop Systems secures long-haul truck program with new AI transportables
  • One Stop Systems (NASDAQ:OSS) has secured first production orders for a ruggedized-edge, transportable system from a self-driving trucking technology company that utilizes level 4 driving automation.
  • The AI Transportables solution for this customer is based on the company’s new ExpressBox 4400, which OSS designed and built to support challenging edge applications like autonomous trucks.
  • These systems provide large scale AI inference and AI training of deep neural networks for some of the world’s most demanding AI applications.
  • “OSS has developed a special expertise in this high growth segment of the edge AI market, which we expect to grow from hundreds of millions in 2021 to multiple billions by 2025." stated OSS President and CEO, David Raun.

Electric vehicle stocks rally after Biden proposes massive investment in EV market
  • The electric vehicle sector is rallying ahead of a speech today by President Biden.
  • Biden's American Jobs Plan covers electric vehicles in detail.
  • White House Fact Sheet on Biden-EVs: "U.S. market share of plug-in electric vehicle sales is only one-third the size of the Chinese EV market. The President believes that must change. He is proposing a $174 billion investment to win the EV market. His plan will enable automakers to spur domestic supply chains from raw materials to parts, retool factories to compete globally, and support American workers to make batteries and EVs. It will give consumers point of sale rebates and tax incentives to buy American-made EVs, while ensuring that these vehicles are affordable for all families and manufactured by workers with good jobs. It will establish grant and incentive programs for state and local governments and the private sector to build a national network of 500,000 EV chargers by 2030, while promoting strong labor, training, and installation standards."
  • "His plan also will replace 50,000 diesel transit vehicles and electrify at least 20 percent of our yellow school bus fleet through a new Clean Buses for Kids Program at the Environmental Protection Agency, with support from the Department of Energy. These investments will set us on a path to 100 percent clean buses, while ensuring that the American workforce is trained to operate and maintain this 21st century infrastructure. Finally, it will utilize the vast tools of federal procurement to electrify the federal fleet, including the United States Postal Service."
  • Select EV stocks of interest: Fisker (FSR +3.3%), Hyliion Holdings (HYLN +3.4%), Li Auto (LI +4.5%), GreenPower Motor (GP +6.8%), Workhorse Group (WKHS +3.3%), XPeng (XPEV +4.0%), Canoo (GOEV +2.2%), Lordstown Motors (RIDE +3.5%), XPEL (XPEL +3.1%), Westport Fuel Systems (WPRT +5.5%), Niu Technologies (NIU +3.3%), Nio (NIO +0.9%), Blink Charging (BLNK +4.7%), Electrameccanica Vehicles (SOLO +0.3%), Churchill Capital Corp IV (CCIV +2.0%) and Ayro (AYRO +2.8%).

What's another $174b more of our tax dollars?

When I got to my first base as a Airman Basic (AB), the squadron was dealing with another AB who had just gotten her first checking account. She had thought as long as she had checks in the checkbook, she could just keep on writing. That is the USA at the moment, it will be awful when it catches up to us.

Agreed. I also read this in the post above , "while ensuring that these vehicles are affordable for all families". That will never happen, unless Biden has a plan on subsidizing new EVs for poverty level Americans. Maybe.....minimum guaranteed EVs on top of minimum guaranteed income? o_O

@Weather Man, I just read your other post. I totally agree that the current Administration, including the House, are spending, spending, spending with no care for the future. As long as this heavy spending satisfies their political agenda, to hell with the future. I, as well, feel terrible for our kids and grandkids who will suffer with this growing debt.
