Michelin recalls tires that don't have enough snow traction

7h ago

DETROIT (AP) — Michelin is recalling more than 542,000 light truck tires in the U.S. because they don't have enough traction to work in all snowy conditions.

The recall covers certain Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires that Michelin says don't meet U.S. safety standards. The tire maker says in documents posted Thursday by safety regulators that tires without sufficient traction can increase the risk of a crash.

Dealers will replace the tires at no cost to owners. Owners will get interim notification letters starting June 12. They'll get another letter once the replacements are available.
The company says initial tire testing was done with the wrong tire pressure. Later tests by Michelin discovered the problem.
Michelin says the tires are marked with the Alpine symbol with three mountain peaks showing they work well in snow, but are not classified as snow tires.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has posted a document with the tire sizes on its website.

Ford F-150 production delayed due to door-handle supply issue - report

F +1.31%May 03, 2023 2:47 PM ET5 Comments
Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is encountering a production issue with its best selling F-150 model, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The outlet reported on Wednesday that “difficulties getting door handles” caused a halt in production for both the electric and ICE versions of the truck. Citing people with knowledge of the situation, the WSJ reported that F-150 production has been restarted after a brief pause with substitute handles “including ones that are the wrong color or don't have the proper key holes” to keep production running until correct versions come available.
The specific vehicles with mismatched door handles have been set aside by the automaker and, as such, some deliveries to customers have reportedly been delayed due to the issue.

Toyota throws in the towel, no fighting the bans.

Toyota Motor sees strong sales increase, eyes EV acceleration

TM +2.21%May 10, 2023 7:25 AM ET1 Comment
Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM) notched a sharp increase in sales for the first annual report offered under new CEO Koji Sato.

The Japanese automaker reported an over 18% rise in revenue year over year to ¥37.15T ($273.6B). Quarterly sales rose even more sharply, about 20%, to ¥9.69T ($72B). Basic earnings per share fell to ¥179.47 from ¥205.23 in 2022, but the company is confident in a rebound in 2023 as supply chain issues ease and EV efforts bear fruit.

“Toyota, with its full lineup and profitable HEVs and PHEVs, along with its diverse options of BEVs that it will be strengthening, will make sure to meet a wide range of global demand and is committed to further growth,” a company statement read. “For growth in emerging markets, profitable HEVs will be used as a source of income, and with a value chain of approximately 10M units sold, we will also take part in a wide range of business opportunities. In addition, we will achieve cost reductions and Kaizen by leveraging the strengths of the Toyota Production
System (TPS), and thereby enhance our future investment capacity for the expansion of growth in BEVs and mobility areas, and establish a strong business foundation whereby carbon neutrality and growth can both be achieved.”

The company is projecting sales revenues of ¥38T ($280.95B) for the full year, narrowly below the $281.14B consensus expectation. Operating income of ¥3T ($22.18B) and earnings per share of ¥190.19 are forecast for the full year.

“When it comes to battery electric vehicles, or BEVs, which are especially rapidly progressing, we have set a pace of selling 1.5M units by 2026 as our “base volume,” and we plan to launch 10 models ranging from luxury vehicles to compacts and commercial vehicles, mainly in the United States and China,” a transcript of the newly minted CEO Koji Sato’s speech reads. “Regarding battery supply, we will seek to speedily secure the necessary volume by increasing our in-house production capacity and collaborating with our partners.”
Japanese-listed shares of Toyota (TM) edged 0.8% higher in Wednesday’s trading. The ADR nudged 1.5% higher in premarket action after the print.

2024 Ford Mustang Quality Review Delays Production

Story by Lucas Bell • Yesterday 12:32 PM

The Ford Motor Company has cut shifts and has plans to stall the Flat Rock Assembly Plant ahead of the sales debut of the S650 generation 2024 Ford Mustang. According to a report by the Detroit Free Press, the production slowdowns have come as a result of quality control issues with the car, which the Blue Oval is attempting to rectify before the pony car hits dealer lots.
Ford previously cut production at Flat Rock assembly during the week of April 24th, before closing down again on May 1st. Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker confirmed to the Detroit Free Press that that facility will yet again face a shutdown during the week of May 8th. While on its face this type of behavior could be the result of retooling, that doesn’t appear to be the case. The Detroit Free Press spoke with an anonymous member of the launch team inside the facility, who stated that FoMoCo completed the build-out of the pony car back in early April. Instead, the source suggests the automaker is undergoing a quality review process, in which it has determined a few problem areas. These include body panel fitment problems, engineering-related electric faults, and valve issues with the 5.0-liter V-8 engines.

2024 ford mustang© Ford

Ford was unwilling to comment directly on the identified problem areas, but Felker did note that the brand has recently adjusted its approach to vehicle launches. The automaker now intends to focus more heavily on quality, which requires a slower rollout so that every detail can be addressed. This adjustment is being made in an effort to reduce recalls after launch, an area Ford has struggled with in recent years. These have included issues with the launch of the all-aluminum F-150 back in 2015, when Ford issued 13 recalls tied to leaky brakes, warped exhaust manifolds causing loss of power, and doors that opened while in motion. In 2020, the launch of the Explorer was so bad that Ford openly admitted to botching it. More recently, we've seen recall and quality issues tied to models like the Bronco and the F-150 Lightning.

"We are committed to ensuring our vehicles are built with the quality our customers deserve and will take the appropriate actions to deliver this commitment,” Fekler told the Detroit Free Press.
Ford’s desires to cut down on recalls are nothing new. CEO Jim Farely recently stated that quality is the brand’s top priority, which likely is playing a role in the situation with S650. Regardless, the situation is understandably frustrating for the UAW employees who face downtime and the potential for temporary layoffs. Hopefully Ford gets things sorted quickly so that we can finally get a taste of the last internal combustion-powered car in its segment.

Court Certifies Silverado Duramax Diesel Lawsuit For 7 States

Story by Thom Taylor • Yesterday 2:49 PM

The ongoing saga of the Bosch CP4 fuel pump used in Chevrolet Silverado Duramax diesel engines has ramped up. After a March 2023 lawsuit over the same fuel pump in Nissan Titan pickups, comes lawsuit state certification for GM Duramax engines with the CP4 pump. The Duramax class action lawsuit is now certified in seven states.

What year Silverado and Sierra trucks are affected?

This lawsuit centers around the 2011 to 2016 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups with the 6.6-liter LML V8 turbodiesel Duramax engine. The CP4 fuel pump replaced the CP3 pump in 2011. Claims of pump defects did not affect the previous CP3 units, according to GM Authority.

The class action lawsuit argues that the CP4 pump is prone to premature wear caused by diesel fuel sold in the U.S. Allegedly, U.S. diesel fuel is drier than in other parts of the world. The result is that the lubrication qualities of non-U.S. diesel fuel help maintain longevity.

Which states are the lawsuit certified in?

2012 GMC Sierra HD | GM

As U.S. diesel fuel starts to degrade the materials in the CP4 pumps, it causes metal shavings to travel through the fuel system. This can lead to not only damage to the fuel system but to the Duramax engine itself. Drivers experience loss of power or the engine stalls out. The lawsuit also claims that GM has known about the issue but chose not to do anything about it. Allegedly, GM hid the problem from buyers.

The states the class action lawsuit has been certified for are Texas, New York, Iowa, Florida, California, and Pennsylvania. It was originally filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The Bosche CP4 fuel pump has quite a storied past. On March 23, 2023, a similar class action lawsuit was filed against Nissan and Cummins Inc. Cummins supplied its 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 to Nissan for its Titan HD pickup trucks built between 2016 and 2019. After 2019, Nissan only offered its 5.6-liter gas engine in the Titan.

Is the same Bosch fuel pump used in other makes?

In June and then again in October of 2022, Ram issued recalls for its Cummins diesel engines equipped with the same CP4 Bosch fuel pump. Over 222,000 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and 3500, 4500, and 5500 chassis cabs with the 6.7-liter turbodiesel engine. Ram dealers replaced the fuel pump under warranty. If other components were damaged these were also replaced for free. Ram first became aware of the problem in October 2021.

Last month the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expanded its investigation into the CP4 fuel pump issues. Besides the aforementioned vehicles potentially affected, the NHTSA probe also includes several BMW diesel models built between 2014 through 2018. BMW issued a recall in August 2021 for those models affected.
So the handling of the CP4 problem by GM and Nissan is completely different than BMW and Ram’s approach.

Supply chain issues and the growth of battery-powered lawn equipment led to this decision.

In addition to automobiles and motorcycles, Honda makes gasoline-powered mowers and equipment like generators and power tools. This equipment ranks among the best in the industry according to review sites like Pro Tool Reviews, which regularly gives Honda's self-propelled mowers top ratings for dependability and ease of use. However, that is about to end as Honda exits the gasoline-powered lawn equipment business next year.

Their small engines are the best out there IMO. I bet in 5 years there will be people willing to pay $1000 for a NOS Honda push mower.

Ford can suck my wang.

DEARBORN, Mich
Ford CEO Jim Farley says his company will stop competing in over-served market segments and instead will place big bets on connected vehicles and digital services.

The days of Ford being all things to all people are over, Farley said at the company's capital markets day event Monday.

The company, he said, has been “stuck in a box,” with thin profit margins, weak growth and low stock valuation.

Ford, Farley said, will emphasize software and services as well as iconic vehicles such as pickup trucks, large SUVs, commercial vehicles and advanced second-generation electric vehicles. He said the company is eliminating waste to close a cost gap with the best in the industry with a “lean disciplined operating system” that reaches into all Ford factories.

Ford's F-Series pickups are the top-selling vehicles in the U.S. and a huge profit center.

Farley said by focusing on software, services and Ford's strengths in products, the company won't be as vulnerable to a downturn as in the past. He said the company has let complexity “overrun our business as we tried to be all things to all people.”

Farley says Ford will be competing differently, going for tailored ownership experiences rather than “jockeying for slivers of market share” with complex vehicles in competitive segments such as two-row crossover SUVs. He said Ford will go to non-negotiated vehicle prices.

Ford has said it will get to a 10% pretax profit margin in 2026. It reiterated 2023 full-year guidance of $9 billion to $11 billion in adjusted pretax profits. Farley said the company has even greater margin ambitions.

To get there, Ford says it will cut costs by reducing the number of parts in its vehicles, as well as cutting warranty and recall expenses by boosting quality.

But Farley said he doesn't see reductions in the number of factory employees or among engineers and other office workers. The company predicted it would sell 5.6 million vehicles in 2026 as global sales recover, and it will need workers to design and produce them, Farley said. Ford sold roughly 4.2 million vehicles last year.

Farley has long complained about Ford’s high retail and warranty costs, and Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford Blue, the company’s internal combustion unit, said the company is making changes to reduce those to improve profit margins.

Rather than testing the new Super Duty pickup to a particular standard, the company tested it until parts and systems failed, he said. Now Ford is finding the eventual weak point and eliminating it, prolonging vehicle life, Galhotra said.

Ford also is focusing on reducing the number of vehicle parts, and on the stability of parts supply companies, he said. For example, by the time Ford rolls out a new version of the F-150 pickup this year, it will have cut 2,400 parts from the existing model,

“We have some chronically inefficient tier one and tier two suppliers,” Galhotra said. Some have caused an unstable flow of parts, he said, adding that Ford has worked with 125 key suppliers to stabilize their operations. “If the present supplier is not on a path to a permanent solution, we’re re-sourcing the business,” he said.

A study by Plante Moran released Monday showed that Ford’s working relations with parts suppliers has declined dramatically since 2020.

Ford also said its new or revamped electric vehicle manufacturing plants will be far more efficient, with nearly 30% less labor overhead than the company's current large internal combustion vehicle plants. But Farley said that doesn't mean fewer factory workers because they'll be needed to make batteries and other EV parts.

Ford Motor Co. also said it cut deals with a number of companies to supply its rapidly growing electrical vehicle division, Ford Model e.

Ford will get more than 100,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide from Albemarle, based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Compass Minerals International announced a multiyear deal to supply Ford with up to 40% of the battery-grade lithium carbonate coming from its project in Utah.

EnergySource Minerals will supply the carmaker with lithium hydroxide from a new site in Imperial Valley, California, and Nemaska Lithium, a Canadian miner, will supply Ford with 13,000 tons of lithium hydroxide annually for 11 years. per year over 11 years.

Because the materials are coming from the U.S. and Canada, it ensures that Ford's electric vehicles will qualify for new federal tax credits, making them more competitive.

Ford has split itself into three business units, Ford Blue, Ford Model e for electric vehicles and digital products, and Ford Pro, the company's commercial vehicle business.

“I’m not here to tell you that we’re under valued,” Farley said Monday. “You make your own decision.”

Shares of Ford fell 1.2% Monday.

Stellantis inks investment in California-based EV battery firm

STLA -3.14%May 25, 2023 6:34 AM ET
European auto giant Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) announced an investment in the Silicon Valley-based Lyten is a Silicon Valley-based supplier of Lithium-Sulfur EV batteries.

The auto manufacturer explained that Lyten’s batteries contrast with traditional lithium-ion batteries in that they do not use nickel, cobalt, or manganese. As such, the batteries are billed as greener and lower cost, with less risk for supply chain disruption. The investment was made via Stellantis Ventures, the auto group’s venture capital arm.

“Having recently visited Lyten together with our CTO Ned Curic and our head of Stellantis Ventures, Adam Bazih, we walked away impressed by the potential of this technology to help drive clean, safe and affordable mobility,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares commented. “Lyten’s materials platform is a key investment for Stellantis Ventures, in line with our Dare Forward 2030 goal to accelerate deployment of innovative, customer-centric technologies. Specifically, Lyten’s Lithium-Sulfur battery has the potential to be a key ingredient in enabling mass-market EV adoption globally, and their material technology is equally well positioned to help reduce vehicle weight, which is all necessary for our industry to achieve carbon net zero goals.”

The investment also backs efforts by Lyten to promote its “3D Graphene applications for the mobility industry…lightweighting composites, and novel on-board sensing.” The size of the investment in the California firm was not disclosed.

Ford reverses course on planned 'tone-deaf' removal of AM radios: 'It was a mistake'

Ford announced it would reverse course on removing AM radios from all "all 2024 Ford and Lincoln vehicles" over concerns surrounding the nationwide emergency alert system.

CEO Jim Farley tweeted Tuesday, "After speaking with policy leaders about the importance of AM broadcast radio as a part of the emergency alert system, we've decided to include it on all 2024 Ford and Lincoln vehicles."
TALKERS publisher Michael Harrison weighed in on the reversal during "America's Newsroom," saying he was not "surprised" the change was made given the "tone-deaf' nature of the original decision.

"This is a big battle that's been won, but the war is still going on," Harrison told co-hosts Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino Wednesday. "But I'm not surprised they turned around. I don't think there was any malicious intent on the part of the automakers to announce that they want to get rid of AM radio. I think it was a tone-deaf… boneheaded move, not understanding the role of AM radio in our society."

Tesla Model Y Was The World's Best-Selling Car In Q1 2023

A very significant, yet depressing milestone.

...and Toyota dominates the rest of the list. Anyone who thinks they are being left behind or sitting this out are in for a surprise. By far the best run car company in the world simply being patient and bidding their time. Defintiely not buying into the whole who can make the biggest political and media splash.
