Just trying to have nice things. Initial part swap project has gone on too long.

I've got nearly 175k, so I think to myself. you know what I should replace the steering rack, p/s pump, and A/c clutch. Everything is back together, turned the wheel lock to lock a couple of times and turned her on, repeat. Okay cool, steering feels better than before. I put it back on the ground and get it ready to drive to my alignment appointment the next day.

Next day, getting ready to go and I've got no power brakes or power steering.
-Pump wasn't whining
-no air bubbles
-nothing.
Cool, ill strong arm it over to the alignment place so they can fix the steering at least and replace the P/s pump on the weekend.

Its today:
I replaced it and still nothing.
-I've turned lock to lock with engine off, With and Without Vacuum.
-I've turned lock to lock with engine on, With and Without Vacuum.
-I've turned it 1/4 of the way each direction with increasing turns and nothing.

WTF am I supposed to look at now? I tested the pump on bench and it was working as intended. The pump I replaced was working as well. I am confused on what I'm missing. System holds Vacuum at around 15-20 as I've placed the hose on the reservoir and left it for 30-60 minutes and it doesn't budge, So I would believe that rules out a leaking hose.

How many times did you turn it lock to lock? When I bled my system I think I did it 30-40 times with the engine off.

Do these systems self-bleed? Not nearly the same thing, but I replaced my daughter’s 2001 F250‘s PS pump, and at first, the system had no power to turn left. Drove it a mile, checked/added fluid, then drove it 20 more miles, and it completely fine now.

I'm probably up there.
I've already bought and installed two pumps so I'm trying to try a different approach before I swap it again.

What bothers me is I can feel resistance from fluid being pushed around by the rack. The pump isn't making any horrible noises so it's not starved I would think. I can turn it on and go left/right and eventually the bubbles stopped, but the brakes and steering are not being assisted. I may just buy another pump if this one doesn't do something in the next day.

I appreciate your "just trying to have nice things" quote.

It sounds like "maybe" you are getting air in your system. Worse case..let your alignment shop sort it out. I know it is hard to trust other folks with our nice things but sometimes we have to.

Let us know how it goes.

this whole situation contradicts itself, or I just do not understand the power steering/hydroboost enough to know Why it is doing what it is doing.

I bench tested the pump before putting it on, i.e. Funnel filled with fluid on the low side, spin the wheel with my drill and squirt the roof from the high side.
I bench tested the pump I took off with the same method.

Pump is on the car and I'm getting no fluid movement like, the pump isn't working.
I'm going to have to pull the pump off as much as I don't want to.

You're most likely ingesting air into the system. Check the supply hose and the fitting on the pump and see if either has fluid on it.

Also, you can crack the lines at the rack, have someone turn the wheel and see if you see air bubbles coming out.

When you turned lock to lock, did you hold it all the way with the car running and hear the pump whining/struggling? Might take a little extra force of the pump to dislodge an air pocket. That’s what I did after installing my Moroso PS tank to bleed it and had no issues.

What's weird is the pump isn't making any noise. I just took the pump off but left it connected, ran it with a drill and I'm seeing it pump fluid as I had air bubbles from disconnecting the line and reconnecting it. Fluid rises when drill is on, fluid drops when drill is off. I know for sure its doing its thing, but I'm going to crack the high pressure line on the P/S pump just to physically see it pumping fluid.
it would be crazy if its just air. Like.. I've gone lock to lock so many times, driven it around without power steering or brakes and its a pain in the ass this go around. Last time I dropped the K the system just started working like usual. I double checked the P/S diagram and i know its impossible to put any hoses in wrong because they're all sized differently.

somehow magic happened and while spinning it with the drill off the car, I felt resistance for the first time and everything works now.
This was a wild ride.
I wanted to try the drill thing on my Audi...can you show how you set this up with pics maybe??
