Hello all,

I am installing Kooks long tubes on a 2004. I also have JBA shorties. I have everything off, exhaust, trannie and bellhousing out, motor mounts out, etc. I know you're supposed to remove the steering shaft. I have the 13MM lower pinch bolt off, as well as the 10MM under the dash. I know the lower and upper shafts are supposed to collapse into one another, but I can't even budge mine.

Am I forgetting something, are their some other tricks, or is mine corroded, rusted, etc? Thanks in advance for any help!

How about the plate that is removable by a 10mm nut or 2. The steering shaft goes through it. I don't know if that would stop the shaft. I think its just for heat/debris/noise. But you didn't mention it.

Removed my MM SS a couple weeks back. Undid bottom bolt on steering rack. Undid top bolt under the dash. Undid the 1 or 2 nuts on that debris/heat/noise plate the the SS goes through. Pull the steering shaft inside the car

But before I undid the top bolt under the dash. I wrapped straps around the steering wheel and to my MM roll bar so it didn't move. You could use your seats also.

I have kooks 1 7/8 headers and just pulled my trans out last weekend for a 6r80 swap......it’s like playing in a jungle gym under the car everything is harder I’m one Mother F***** away from pulling them out and going turbo so I don’t have to deal with them. FWIW.

Thanks for your info. I did see the dust boot, but didn't remove it yet. I have the lower pinch bolt off(13MM) and the upper 10MM pinch bolt. My issue is that even with both ends disconnected, I can't budge the damn shaft either way. I can't see where to remove any bolts holding the shaft to the rack; I don't know if I need those, wherever they are. It's just the pinch bolt, right? Does the rag joint itself separate? I don't see anything special in the shop manual. The instructions from Kooks and or JBA, say just what I mentioned. A call to MM about the issue states the same thing, although they are great to talk with.

Certainly there must be someone here that has done allot of these, and knows how to get some slack in this steering assembly...?

I think the part of the steering shaft in the engine bay will collapse a little. But I don't remember how much as it's been a long time. If you didn't unbolt the plate at the firewall then the shaft is never going to come out. You might need to pull back the carpet to see the plate and the bolts holding it in.

Thanks. Haven't seen you around lately. Ok. I will remove the plate. A couple of you guys have mentioned this, so it's time to do it. It's easy to see up against the firewall. Will let all you guys know what happens. Thanks.
