Is there a good how to for installing the thrust bearing. I can't seem to find one.

I think it's because nobody knows... You might want to try asking in the cobra section, way more traffic over there. Also try searching for a Ford Shop Manual, I'm sure it's have that info in there, a while back someone posted a link to one iirc
I saw one on mach1registry but can't view it because my account hasn't been activated
(edited wrong motor) the thrust bearing should be on #5 it is for endplay. set it to .008 max is .012. if its too tight sand it, if its too loose get a different one or use shims if supplied

My big problem is I don't know where the shims go
#5 on the block side facing the rear seal/transmission

cool, try the thrust bearing without the shims and add shims if necessary. shims go in between main bearing and thrust bearing. shouldn't need them tho. if you need any other help let me know.
Are the holes normal? Are they going to have any ill effects
they are meant for securing it. mostly for high hp automatic cars. ive never had the screws machined. the groves are for oil.

Contacted mmr and they said it's was part of the machinng process and that it won't have any ill effect that intact it will keep the crank oiled
hmm, always seen them screwed in. but ive never done it.
Only problem is our blocks don't have screw holes
The shims are for the cap side and the 1 piece with holes is for the block side (back), the shims go between the bearing and the cap. We can send a schematic if you email our tech dept.
I emailed them recently and that is what he said. But never gave me a diagram. Will try again
