Hello everyone & good morning my name is Victor! I am looking for a little insight on a job Im in the middle of & it's kicking my rear end. I believe from all the research I've done that the pumpkin is cast steel & should be welded with a nickel rod. What I cant find is to what temperature I need to heat it up to & at what amps to weld at. I am trying to tig weld the axle tubes along with the center housing for support & its been a hit & miss. Some of my welds held just fine while others did not. Im not a certified welder by any means & Im at a loss on what Im doing wrong. Any & all help is appreciated. Thanks!

Reaper14,

Not a welder but I did find a decent guideline for welding cast iron at
LincolnElectric.com (under 'support' then "welding how-to's"). I'll ask one of the guys at work if he can help out with advice and an explanation of the cracked welds.
Welding Cast Iron | Lincoln Electric

Thanks for the reply sir. I ended up figuring it out after much trial & error, advice, & asking around. Found this same write up here & it also helped a bit. Only difference is our centers are cast steel, not iron. Main thing I was kept being told was to MIG not TIG it. But being as stubborn as I am, I refused to return my tig. Either way all good now. Just hope I din't warp anything. Thanks again Chris.

Keep that TIG Victor!
It's the welder of choice for custom fabricating and once mastered, sky's the limit.

Reaper14,

Thanks for posting an update and it's good to hear everything worked out. Pardon my sloppy researching - I missed the cast steel vs. cast iron point.

You'll have to post up some progress porn for us so we can see how the project is coming along (please). :D
