I finally got around to editing this video from last June. This has music with it so all you purists please don't get pissed at me if you don't like it! :p

If you are unfamiliar with open road racing here is the site; http://www.openroadracing.com/index.html

Here is my VIDEO - Enjoy!

LMK what you think. I'm planning on a return trip with a 140 tech speed this time. Need to upgrade seatbelts/harnesses to pass safety inspection.

All comments welcome,

Dave

pretty cool Dave. It must feel pretty slow on a big open road like that. In the video it looked like you were going 60mph!

What do you need to be in the 160mph class? I might have to look into this, it might be a lot of fun. I already have recaro seats, race harness, forged rims. . . . hmmm driving 160 would be awsome!

You will need a roll cage, a racing suit, extinguisher, and good tires. The exact details are spelled out on the website. 2003 was the second running of the Bonneville, a guy got killed the first year when he blew a tire but he was running in the unlimited ckass >200 mph. The event is held in a casino with dinners, meetings, car show, 1K drag race, etc. You'd love it.

yea the only expensive thing would be the roll cage. It still might be fun to try though.

How did you like it? It looked like you had a great time. It would be cool to get out on the open road like that and be allowed to cruise at 110mph.

Dave that looks so addicting. Bet you can't wait to go again.
BTW how did you mount your video camera without roll bar?

I had a truly great time. I had my wife and kids with me and my navigator bud Brian. We stayed at a casino/hotel with a pool right outside our rooms. We gambled, met other drivers, attended a few orientation meetings, tech inspections, and made a rookie qualifying run with a trainer.
All of this was great but the driving was the focal point. Not having done anything like this before, and aware of the fatality in the inaugural race the year before, I felt it wise to opt for the touring class so I could get a feel for the road, etc. The other thing was that as you move up in class the safety requirements get more involved. If you listen closely towards the end of the video right after we crossed the finish line, you can hear me say to Brian that I wanted to go faster. I actually put the car on cruise with the air on while driving some of the straightaways. Next time I'm getting seats/harnesses and will top out at 140, (Grand Touring Class).

In this vid, we put the camera on the back deck and secured it to those mounts behind the seats, I think they are for kid seats or something. The video of this run was only the first half of the event. We all staged at the end then turned around and ran the course back to the start. Roughly 50 miles each way- total 100 miles henceforth Bonneville 100. Oh, and the Bonneville salt flats are like twenty minutes from Wendover.
Anyway, on the return leg, we remounted the camera to the dashboard with duct tape for a different perspective. maybe I'll post that video if anyone is interested.
By the way, I was in Dearborn the week before for the Ford 100 year celebration. I drove in two SVT events there; Waterford Hills road course and Milan Dragway. Here's a vid of three runs at Milan including a 1/8 mile run with my 14 year-old son riding shotgun. http://www.svtperformance.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50435

Great idea to mount camera, will have to try that.
Looks like you had fun at SVT event. I went to Waterford Hills and Milan back in 2000 Fords first SVT Experence. This past May went to SVT event at Sebring and got to run road course, skid pad and autocross what a blast. Even got to meet KevinJKD there. Plan on going again on April 9-11. How about you Kevin?

Pretty cool vid. Sure likes like "Bendover". I haven't been there since living in Salt Lake City. Isn't it pretty close to SLC?

Salt lake to Wendover is about a hundred miles. I drove to Wendover from Chicago with my daughter. My wife, son, and navigator flew into SLC and rented a car. You get to drive by the Bonneville salt flats along the way, pretty cool.
