I know we have some regular and serious lifters and gym rats here so I'll ask if any of you know anything about this place. Apparently it's a large chain so I looked into it since there is one close to me and is open 24/7. I went in this morning to see if I could walk around for 30 seconds and was promptly greeted by some grossly overweight man. I asked if I could take a quick look and he said I needed an escort. I was surprised since the place wasn't that big(did he think I was going to steal a stationary bike?). I sighed and said okay but then he wanted me to fill out a form with name/address/phone#/email, etc. I said to him, "Dude. Can't we just walk around for a minute? I'll be able to tell right away if this is a place I want to join." He said that was not possible so I wished him a good day and left. I read up on Planet Fitness and from what I could see it caters to non-serious exercisers because serious lifters/exercisers intimidate them. I don't even recall seeing any barbells or squat racks. WTF is this a real place????

That’s fairly accurate. And a common critique of that chain.
Anytime fitness is also 24 hrs, fairly common around populated areas and in my experience with using them around the country is at least adequately equipped for most stuff. Now if you’re an advanced lifter like me, look for lifetime, la fitness or golds. Those are likely the only chains where you will find dumbbells >100

I've never understood the hate for PF. I've been a member for a long time and haven't noticed anything too weird. Mine is a HUGE gym with at least 3 of every machine.
I get its not for hardcore lifters, but to be honest... A lot hardcore lifters are dickbags in the gym, so it works for me and my wife. I don't want to hear some 300LB muscle bag grunting and screaming while I'm working cardio. The few Golds I've been to seem to be full of lifters who get so bent out of shape for the smallest things. I get it, because they are super serious about lifting, but... Really? Calm down Karen.
Its just like any rec sport. It can come with a lot of elitisms. Go to a fancy gun range, golf course, tennis court, car show, or just about anything and a lot of times you are greeting by people looking down their nose at you or taking their hobby way too serious.

It's seems every gym has its own set of problems. Our local Snap Fitness is open 24 hours. Once covid hit, a lot of younger kids started joining and trashing the place. They were basically getting a free membership because the highschool gyms weren't open due to covid....

It took over a year for the owners to finally kick some of them out indefinitely after numerous complaints and watching video.

Some suggest getting a home gym. But for me I need to leave the house. I tried lifting at home during the shutdown. It's not the same.

My small town of 6,200 has an Anytime Fitness. It is excellent. It’s 24/7 and ours has all the equipment one could need. I will say though that they don’t all seem to be created equal. It’s depends on the individual owners. Our owners are award winning lifters.

Lol.

You are exactly the type that engenders the dislike for the place. If you go to the gym to eat tofu pizza, prance around on an elliptical to get your 'cardio' in, and make prissy faces at the mean loud guys lifting dumb bells you are the prime clientele for Planet Fitness.

Also, its summer - go do proper cardio outside.

I did some dead lifts there one day when my other gym was closed and I was told that I dropped the weights too hard...... I told the employee to go eat a bowl of dicks!

He said he was gonna call the Police. I said good Ill be waiting for them...... They arrived about 20 mintues later and approaced me at the squat rack. One of them clearly trained and was quite large!

He asked what the problem was? I said he got upset because I dropped the weight on the ground after a did a set. Well, he turned and looked at the employee and waited for his response.......

The employee who was about 130 lbs soaking wet said "Well he dropped the weight and it made a loud noise". The cop responded back..... "A loud noise?"

He went onto explain to him that yea thats what happens when u drop 400+ lbs on the ground what did u expect to happen?

The little ****** turned around and went back behind his desk to get back on gay fb page and everyone there laughed at him! It was a priceless moment in my life! The cop did tell me to refrian from calling him names tho.......lol

Trust me bro no hardcore lifter wants u in their gym anymore then u want them in there...... Cardio?

Bro if ur doing cardio on the treadmill that means ur fat and out of shape...... Try running outside where real men train! The GYM is for weight training. Try to wrap ur head around that!

The family I work for owns quite a few of them. They are HUGE money makers. Since they are all owned individually, typically owned by the same group in an area. They are all slightly different. The one near me is not owned by the family I work for but it seems its more of a rec league level gym.

At our old place they opened a planet fitness that was pretty darn close. The price was like.. $10/month.

It was between that and 24 hour, which we were paying $60/month and was 10 miles further. No brainer for me. I could get a work out just fine on the purple machines.

There were actually some pretty big dudes in there frequently. The thing that did piss me off was the candy at the front desk and one of the workers was a very chubby, prissy (and like... sassy?) dude who would sit there and eat candy the entire time. You could not ask him a question or have him greet you without him talking with ****ing candy in his mouth. I avoided him at all costs after the first few times.

It was also generally not busy from 7pm-9pm so we would go between those hours.

Naww, I prefer jogging waste deep in the ocean against the current. Easier on the joints (less impact) while still building strength. Depending on how hard you want to work, a few pounds of lead on a weight belt allows you to run deeper while still maintaining traction.

it seems that's the key - is who owns it. They target the demographic they do because just like most of them are too lazy to actually go to the gym they're also too lazy to cancel a $10/month membership.

Yeah bro. That's me. Eating tofu pizza and prancing around.
Thanks for confirming my post "A lot hardcore lifters are dickbags in the gym"
Go back to slapping your boyfriends ass after a good lift.

That's why I go to a gym, bro. Not a dedicated weight room.
Try running outside with a wrecked neck, hips, and knee. 10 years of wresting will do that to ya.
