Does anyone know if the manufacturer recommends premium gas for this vehicle? Thinking about buying a used one and want to know if I can get away with using regular gas...
Thanks...

Octane recommendations
Your vehicle is designed to use
“Premium” unleaded gasoline with
an (R+M)/2 octane rating of 91 or
higher for optimum performance. (R+M)/2 METHOD
The use of gasolines with lower
octane ratings may degrade performance. The use of gasolines labeled as
“Premium” in high altitude areas that are sold with octane ratings of less
than 91 is not recommended.

That should be sufficient.

We have an 2004 Navigator and that is all we put in is premium fuel...It does get expensive though...

I put premium in all my cars including my 97 Silverado...

Is it not the same as the Expedition drivetrain, if not what is the recommendation for the Expedition?

What a waste. If it doesn't need the extra octane you are just throwing your money away.

You could probably do it and not hurt anything, but that would be silly. Engines optimized for premium fuel get better mileage on premium fuel. It won't do you any good to save 10% on fuel if your mileage drops 15% on the cheap gas.

No. It's a DOHC 5.4. The Expedition is probably happy with the cheap stuff.

Are they all tune for it? If not, why?

No, they aren't set up for it. To take advanted of premium fuel in a computer controlled application intended for regular you need to either increase the compression, rework the timing and fuel maps, or both. The PCM is setup to provide a max amount of timing unless knock is detected, then pull timing. There is no avenue for timing to be added to the engine with extra octane. It can pull it out, but can't add it. To get more timing no either need a chip/reprogram or twist the distributor. More timing doesn't always mean more power either, so you've got to consider that.

lmao.. you put premium grade fuel in a car requiring regular to lose efficiency? Sweet.. :bash:
Unless you're running lean.. you might as well give me the extra $0.20 a gallon..

more octane isnt gonna do much unless its required.
