Question regarding my last job interview...

Hello all,

I am in the market for a new job as I'm getting a bit burned out of being in the car business on a dealership level. I've been looking at both sales and administrative positions in the industry but with better hours (ie. occasional to no weekends) and less stress of relying 100% on commission.

I recently interviewed for a great company for a position that after 3 interviews I was informed that I did not get, yet that I was the runner-up and that they are interested in me for another position within the company.

Their Talent Specialist (recruiter) called me this past Monday to share the news and asked if I would be interested in the other position to which I replied that I would be. The next day I sent her an email to get more information regarding the position, hiring timeframe, and whether or not I needed to do another round of interviews. I have already done three interviews for a collective 5 hours with said company.

She told me that she would email me with more information as soon as it becomes available - the position is listed on the companies website as well as other job sites such as Indeed.

Has anyone ever been in my shoes before? I'd really like to work for this company and am thrilled that they are interested in me for another position. More often than not you're told you didn't get the job and you have to move on. The suspense is killing me though - I don't want to pester the recruiter either for more info.

Cliffs:
Interviewed for a job
Didn't get it
Told I am being considered for another position
Waiting... Waiting...

The best job I've ever had started that way. They could be testing you out hoping to slide you into the other position at some point or they want you for this other spot. It's tough to say if they're not telling you.

This happens from time to time. Many people go for jobs they want vs the jobs they are most qualified for. It's easy for objective persons looking from the outside to see that, but you as yourself may not be able to grasp.

It sounds like this is a case here of you simply being a better fit for the other job. With that said, most companies that I've ever worked for a dealt with hire from a pool of candidates even if there is a prime candidate in consideration. You should expect to interview for that job regardless of being a prime candidate.

don't be a pest but maintain contact. I would keep in contact with the recruiter at least once a week.

I'm happy to hear that! I'll stay optimistic.

I agree and this position is more geared towards my sales experience. Although I was hoping to move away from sales, this would be more B2B focused and I'd be working for a company that was voted top 100 places to work in Philly last year.

I also agree that I should expect to have to interview again for this position.

Great advice and I've taken that into consideration myself. I was tempted to email the recruiter today but I'm going to give it until Monday afternoon just as a friendly check-in to see how the process is coming along.

The listing for this position has been online for about two weeks. The position I had previously interviewed for was removed from their website prior to my last interview at about the 20 day mark so I'd imagine just as was said above that they are still accepting applications.

While there's obviously no guarantee or offer on the table I'm hoping that I have a decent leg-up on the competition already.

You interviewed well and they think you would be an asset to their team. It's frustrating waiting for the call but it's very good news that they're still considering you for employment. Hang in there and stay in contact but don't pester. It will all work out.

Sounds to me like even though you didn't get the original job interviewed for that they are interested in you and want to make you a part of their team therefore the second job was mentioned. Hang in there. They will call when you least expect it and make your day

I would follow up with an email, thank her for her time and consideration, let her know you enjoyed speaking with her and were impressed with their company and their team and that you look forward to hearing from them.

It is kind of like sending someone that gave you a Christmas gift a hand written thank you letter. They will interview many people and a handful will be qualified, when they have to pick between qualified candidates, sometimes its the little things that they tend to remember.

Sorry for the delay! Surprisingly, no - I have not heard anything. I emailed the recruiter in the beginning of last week, and again Thursday evening hoping to have some sort of information by Friday. At this point I'm not counting on anything although the job listing is still online. Maybe I wasn't the right candidate or they've decided to hold for a bit on making any hiring decisions.

Don't give up hope. Maybe just taking applications still.

Based on my experience with this sort of thing, they are blowing smoke up your ass. Keep job hunting & follow up with them from time to time. Hopefully, they are not wasting your time, though.

I've been in similar shoes...

I had to leave a position I had been in for 6 yrs, and take a leap of faith, and a moderate pay cut to eventually work my way up to management. If this position is 80-90% of your ideal want list, including weekends off, pull the trigger. If anything you'll gain some new experience which will make you more marketable if you decide to pursue other avenues outside of this organization.

Left retail Management
Started as basic IT tech
Moved up through the ranks
Now an IT Supervisor
DO it!

Could easily be this. I've had recruiters tell me all sorts of things in the past. I usually have always tried to deal with the company direct. So much easier and you get a lot more upfront answers.

Most recruiters are just trying to get their commissions. They have never done jack for me.

I once had a recruiter say that I'm exactly what the company is looking for and will be on the payroll by the end of the week. Needless to say I never heard from the guy ever again.

Yeah - I'm finding the whole recruiter game to be a real waste of time. I'm sure companies are missing out on good employees because of their "talent acquisition specialists".

I had put in an application to a position with another company back on January 20th that I'm interested in and perfectly qualified for. Sure enough I never get a response. I said screw it this time and stalked out a recruiter for them on Linkedin and sent him a direct message. We'll see what happens.
