Anybody know what else happened on April 23, 1945?
The raid on Los Banos outside Manila, a Japanese prison camp was liberated by the 11th Airborne division. More than 2000 prisoners were safely rescued from the Japanese without losing one prisoner 25 miles behind enemy lines.

"Rescue at Los Banos" was a great book about that, horrifying and amazing what happened.

Several books about this have been written.
One of the prisoners, Carrol Talbot, wrote the book "Escape at Dawn" about her time in custody and the rescue. My dad took part in the rescue and was interviewed about his part in it. She and my dad kept in contact through the years.
A couple of chapters in the book are his account of what he and his Recon Platoon pals did to ensure the rescue was successful.

I was not aware of this raid on Los Banos. Thank you for the info and comments. I'm going to have to look at both "Escape at Dawn" and "Rescue at Los Banos". Amazing that you dad was part of the reconnaissance platoon.

Events like this and the people that lived through or died during them are why I rarely ever complain. One of my "Sea Daddies" had a grandfather (Axis German) that survived the gulag after surviving and being captured on the Eastern Front, his stories were unbelievable to say the least.
