Driving to the store tonight around 545pm. It was dark, and dry out. The road I was on is a two lane state highway, with a full middle "turning lane" that runs for several miles to assist people turning left, when traveling in either direction. Speed limit is 55mph.

I noticed in front of me, about 500 feet, a car on a side street "blew threw his stop sign" and got in front of me. He did not cut me off, and had plenty of space to merge, but he ran the stop sign to do it. I caught up to him easily, as I was already doing the limit, and his mid 90s Honda was only able to get up to about 45mph, in the time it took for our two cars to catch each other. I was going to high beam him / honk in disgust of him running the stop sign, but realized he probably wouldn't have put 2 and 2 together. It had a loud fart can, not that this matters, but I found it amusing.

About 1/2 mile from where he merged/ran the stop sign, is a traffic light. It was red with 10 or so cars COMPLETELY STOPPED waiting for the green. As we both approach, I get to the point where I start to brake, and the Honda just keeps going. I'm slowing to about 20mph, and he's 10 car lengths ahead of me, and still NO BRAKE LIGHTS from his car. I said to myself, "Is this guy going to f'ing stop?" I slow to almost a stop now, about 15 car lengths behind him, sensing a major wreck is about to unfold in front of me, and when he was about 30 feet away from the last stopped car, I see him slam on the brakes, tires screech, and WHA----BAMMMMM rear ends a late model Cadillac who was the last car in the line of COMPLETELY STOPPED CARS!!!! WTF!

This guy just totally rear-ended this old lady, who was sitting at the light, completely stopped, and this guy flat out rams her at like 30mph! Are you telling me people are this ignorant behind the wheel? I really couldn't believe what I saw!!

The woman got out, she was totally ok, and the accident causing driver seemed dazed. Other people got out of their cars and called the police, and since I was already late, I left.

I realize why every motorcycle safety course recommends you always look behind you, leave the bike in gear, and have enough of a space to make an emergency move in case someone is about to rear end you, when stopped at a red light.

To see two cars, destroyed, for "no good reason", is still unbelievable and hard to accept!

    Watch out, out there!

I have been stopped at that light in my GT500, its close to home I use this road every day. Sorry to hear about your accident and the loss of a Cobra!

I hope that lady had her headrest adjusted right. Major whiplash. I had a super tiny rear end accident once. A car tapped me that was going about 10mph, as I was stopped, and whiplash is no joke. My neck hurt for a good month. I had my headrest wayyyy to low, and suffered the consequences.

If I was you I would have stopped to report to police what you witnessed. Dude was probably high or drunk and the cops should have been informed of his behavior. Im sure they figured it out if he was but it is always good never to assume that.

I know someone who hit a car head on after smoking heroin only to have it never found out that they were high. Pissed me off to no end.

I might stop by the local PD tomorrow. It's pretty obvious what happened, but it would be nice to nail him for that stop sign violation.

So many cars blow through that stop sign. IMO though, it could be re-hung as a yield sign, as there is plenty of view, and you can only turn right from it. Sort of like a mini freeway on ramp, but with a stop instead of a yield sign.

You, sir, are a witness to the accident and should report it so to the local gendarmes.

The prima facia evidence is clear that he was the causal factor however every bit of evidence- physical or testimonial- is helpful in investigating and prosecuting a case, even if it's only for insurance purposes. The victim, the Caddy driver, deserves justice and you can help her find it.

    Be a good citizen.

saw something very similar this summer. Car in front of my was weaving back and forth and I thought to myself he must be texting. The light down the street was red. As we are coming to the light I see it goes green but can't see in front of the car. The right lane was open so I changed lanes and that is when I could see the cars stopped at the light had not moved yet and the car drove right into the back of them. If I had not changed lanes I may have drove into that car also since you see the light is green at this point and the car isn't slowing down so you would think the traffic was moving in front of him

Probably texting. I swear, if someone went Mad Max on cell towers, you'd see an instant decline in motor vehicle accidents until some other form of distraction replaced it.

A friend of our family got struck on his Honda Goldwing ~10 years ago while sitting at a red right. Pickup truck wailed into him at 40mph and he went through the windshield of the truck- messed up his spine pretty bad.

I find it crazy that in my line of work, we have to include tens of thousands of dollars of safety equipment to ensure that the most oblivious of idiots cant hurt themselves, yet we still trust them to get in 4000lb chunks of steel that move 60+mph at the end of each day.

I actually ordered a dash cam last week (Garmin dash cam 45) because I'm seeing too many stupid drivers and had a few close calls. I think it would be smart to report what you saw to the police.

Wife and I got rear ended last night--luckily it was very minor. The guy that hit us didn't speak english and didn't have a license. To my surprise, he did have insurance, but we'll see how that goes...

Way to leave the scene of an accident OP. Maybe the driver, who caused the accident, thought his time was more important than paying attention.

Hopefully better than my wreck. Nationwide (the other drivers insurance) is trying to not take responsibility for the wreck even thought he other driver was charged with careless and reckless and leaving the scene of an accident. In West Virginia the charges designate blame by state law. My 17 Focus SEL that I drive back and forth to work has now been sitting for 2 months. Finally decided yesterday to get it fixed under my insurance and let them go after these idiots.

Yup. I almost witnessed a wreck myself the other night, because someone was messing with their phone while driving.

It was on a 4 lane road, I notice a Mercedes in the right lane about 3 cars ahead of me swerving mildly (I was in the left lane). After seeing that I backed off to about 8 cars behind. We go about another half a mile and sure enough the car swerves into my lane. After about another 100 feet the car goes off the road to the right for a bit and swerves back onto the street.

I was wondering what caused them to swerve and found out as we got to the stop light. They were completely stopped in the right lane and I passed by in the left and saw a video playing on their phone.

I got hit while stopped at a light about 13 years ago after we got out of school. It was a girl the grade below me and when I asked her why she didn't stop her response was, "I was trying to slow down by downshifting (she drove a mid-90's Civic)". So, I suppose it never dawned on her to hit the brake pedal...I don't think she had her license for more than a month at that time.

I'm with many others. My bet is it was phone related.

You definitely need to report it to the cops. Glad the lady was okay tho

Just went through a similar situation with my old man on 9/11. Sitting at a red light in the pickup and got rear ended by a drunk driver doing 35mph. Dude was plastered, unbelievable. And see too many close calls almost every other day that makes you wonder how people can be so ignorant and stupid
