In a 94 mtx SHO, when in neutral, when you move the shifter all the way to the left or to the right, should it pop back to the middle?

I believe most manuals SHOuld ;-) I know my 90 with the cable shifter does.

Yes it should. There is piece in the shifter that can get worn out, and not return it to the center.
