What power adder do you have? Did you choose a taller 28.7 tire for better traction? Has your T56 ever locked you out of second gear? I believed this has happened to me only when my T56 Mag wasn't hot enough.

It also seems like the Magnum shifts better with the 3.73 than the 3.31s. I haven't been locked out of second since the gear swap.

What RPM will you be turning the car to.

I have a 890rwhp car with the same gear setup in the trans. The 2.97.. I run 3.73's with a 26" tire.. BUT the big question is going to be RPM you turn on the car per gear. For me 8000. So I can get a way with the 26" tire. Answer that I'll be able to give you a better idea of what gear to run.. With the 28.7" tire though, I'm already leaning towards a 4.10 gear..

I have a Roush TVS on E85 @ 10lbs. (720rwhp/590rwtq) For traction purposes, I needed the widest drag radial I could get; NITTO NT05R 315/35/20 which happens to be 28.7 in diameter. My T56 shifts very nice so far in all gears...hot/cold

I shift around 7,000 . I'm happy with the new 3.73s in my 2.97 T56. I'm just curious about how tire height effects traction and quickness with a street car. I have a 275/ 60/15 ET Street R tire that is 28.2 and was thinking about possible going wider or taller since traction has become a bit of an issue. How does such a short 26'' tire effect traction on the street? How does shifting higher in the rmps allow you to get away with a short tire? Get away with it in terms of what?

So a shorter tire is a quicker, but top speed with be effected obviously because less rotation. Shifting higher allows for the MPH to still be there on a short tire. You will have more traction with a taller tire due to it being less quick in rotation and more sidewall. BUT really you need to get the tires hot either way. I'll bet you are just rolling around and stabbing it.. Do a burn out and then go street race before the actual race..

Here's an example for gearing/tire height etc.. And I'll use it for street racing..

Lets say that you ran 40-140.. and this is the main thing mph you race from. You'd want the top of 4th to be at 140 or 150 or so..

With 3.73's and a 28" tire at 140mph you're at 7000rpm for example
With 3.73's and a 26" tire at 140mph you're at 7500rpm for example. And at 7000 you're at 130mph.

That 3.73's and 26" tire combo will be quicker getting to 140mph than the 28" combo. BUT you need that rpm to get to 140mph.. IF you don't have that RPM to spare (which it's a coyote and should be able to spin that easily enough) you'll need to have the 28" tire combo..

I hope that make sense.

I'll take your advice and heat the tires up more often. Thank you for the information. It makes sense.

i just blew my mt82 .... i purchased the magnum xl but i went with the 2.66 1st gear ratios .... they are closer than the wider 2.97 first ratios ..... for my centri set up (700/565) i wanted the next gear to land higher so went with the closer ratios on the magnum and swapping the 3.31s for 4.10s ..... should work out nicely ... I run a 27.44 tall tire 305/35/19 NTo5r

My car is making 930/740 now and really Thinking about going with 3.55 with my T 56 magnum 2.97. I’d like to get some hook in second. Shoot, I might even go back to 3.31s.
