If you're the type that likes to put the hammer down on your Mustang and it's over a few years old, this is the time to do a little preventative maintenance. Head to your local auto repair spot for an electrical system check. Ford alternators are infamous for failure. The repeated (quick) trips to a higher than stock redline is what kills them. You can 'pulley them down' to slow the peak rpm. Our partners at Billet Pro Shop have an answer but at the end of the day, you're going need a bigger boat if you're racing your car.
After two failures of factory units and a higher capacity "performance" 200 amp alternator on our 2007 GT500 we decided to step up our game. The mid-line performance alternators will cost you $350-$450 for a 200 amp. They're not cheap, but if you've ever had one simply quit on you, you'll know it's no fun when everything in the car shuts down, starting with your electronic fuel injection.
After much research we came to the conclusion that the Mac Daddy of alternators would be our choice. MechMan Alternators produces some fire breathing units that are built to take the abuse we give our GT500 yet works perfectly for your daily driver. Our particular MechMan is a 6 phase, high output 250 amp Elite series. We also opted for the 2.90" racing 6-rib serpentine pulley to keep the rpm in line. It's fully tested and proven to provide 172 amps at an 800 rpm idle and 265 amps at 1,800 rpm cruise! A quick look at the data after the installation showed a steady 14.1v at idle. The truth is, we'd never seen that solid of a power level even when the car was fresh off the truck!
We believe and you should, too. Get your system checked because it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when" on your late model Ford. In fact, we like MechMan so much we decided to offer them at vmptuning.com
