Wheel size question?

Kind of been pondering this for awhile... The folks have a spare set of black chrome Roush 380r 17x8.5. I've been concidering mounting these wheels up for a change of pace on the old 03. Would there be any drawbacks going from the 17x9's to the 8.5's? I know there might be an unnoticable change in handling.

I have 18x8 on the front and it's on rails. Never understood why everyone wants 305's on the front. I'd prefer less weight and less friction especially if not road coursing the car.
